2015 Honda HR-V vs the Competition

Editor's Note: here is the full launch story of the Honda HR-V.

The small crossover segment battle is heating up with the entry of the Honda HR-V. But just how does it stack up against its similarly sized (and priced) rivals, the Mitsubishi ASX and Subaru XV? Well, this is your chance to play trump cards. In this round, we decided to pit the top-of-the-line models against each other to give you a better idea of their specs vis-à-vis their rivals.

  1. Forget the XV, I don't like boxer engine in the long run.
ASX leather seats, panoramic sunroof & 50K discounts on some dealers & well-priced.
HRV hands down fully loaded but can't afford the price, out of budget.
Will drive the ASX, my choice.

    1. U dont like boxer engine in the long run? Why? U have boxer FB20 engine? Because fron what i heard, boxer engines are for the long haul.

    2. Subaru has gained a following because of its boxer engines. Reviews of the engine is 'legendary'.

    3. LOL. What the Subaru fanb0is don't mention is that these boxer engines are all oil guzzlers, it's right there on page 12-13 of the Owner's Manual. It's one design drawback of all horizontally-opposed cylinder engines. It consumes up to a quart of oil every 1-2 months that is why you need to check the engine oil level at least once a month. It's like owning a primitive 2-stroke mototcycle engine where you have to add the engine oil together with the gasoline! Lolz.

    4. ^ True. Personally though, haven't really experienced that with my Subaru's FB20 engine. This is more likely with the 6-cylinder EZ36 and probably the older EJ25 engines.

    1. 2015 Mitsubishi ASX lost the 7 airbags and stability control sadly.

  3. I thought Honda will be bringing in their 1.5 turbo vtec engines... what's up with the 1.8?

    1. baka later this year pa kung tingin nila di nagcclick, ibang bansa late rin dumating yung 1.5

      Delete
    2. In other markets, there's an option of a normally aspirated 1.5. No turbo yet for the HR-V.

      Delete
    3. I believe the 1.5 turbo will make its debut in the upcoming 10th gen Civic.

    4. Yup. Likely to replace the K24 as the Si's engine. I wonder if we'll be getting that here...hmm...

  4. ASX is tempting but the lack of stability control is a huge red flag.

    1. Agree with you. For the safety issue, it is best to check on ratings by NHTSA, IIHS or Euro NCAP. Subaru XV has five star rating. ASX has lower. Honda HR V has not been submitted.

  5. Will still go for Hyundai i20 Cross Sport but hopefully they will also release A/T diesel.

    1. Isnt the i20 cross sport smaller than the hrv/asx?

    2. direct competitor is supposed to be ix25/Creta, the i20 cross is most likely the competitor to the soul or ecosport, but the ecosport wins in terms of ride height

  7. HRV's pricing is expensive. At that price range, I'd rather go for Isuzu MU-X or new Ford Everest instead.

Hope that Ford brings in their EcoSport Diesel AT variant.

      Mitsubishi ASX
      P 1,248,000
      3-years / 100,000 km

      Subaru XV

    2. For Subaru XV.
      3-years / 100,000 km also

      Delete
    3. Since when did Subaru here go 100,000 km? As of last year, it was 60,000 km for all models but STI. STI is 1 year, 20,000 km

    4. if i recall correctly the subaru xv is now less 100,000.00 php.

    5. The P100k discount offer is limited time and for cash buyers. In other words, not a real price reduction. They have same offer with Forester 2.0i-L.

      Delete
    6. The 100k discount for XV is no more available

      Delete
    7. Because that's only for the run out 2014 model. They're starting to display the MY15 model. That one doesn't have any discounts.

  9. @ P1,378,000, the AWD Subaru XV seems a better proposition

  10. Still Subaru Hands down. With Paddle Shifters, AWD and 100% Japan Made

  11. 2015 asx is made in Japan icymi

    ReplyDelete
  12. Is the HR-V made in Japan or Thailand?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That makes it even more expensive.

If it has 7 airbags, the price is justifiable.
If it's made in Japan with 7 airbags that price is justified.

Thailand is part of the ASEAN that has preferential tariff
rates among its members. Honda can price this cheaper
it wants to. But sadly it's not.

Obviously, Honda is aiming for a higher margin on the HRV
and at the same time push the ugly Mobilio as their volume
      seller.

      I don't think they will succeed. I hope they don't. :P

  13. HRV is made in Thailand only..

    ReplyDelete
  14. Too expensive. Why get the Honda HRV if you can afford the Honda CR-V? Get the Mitsubishi ASX, cheaper to maintain.

    1. Actually the XV Premium now gets even more stuff compared to the base:

      - Push button start/stop with passive keyless entry
      - Dual zone climate control
      - Touch screen audio system with voice command
      - Revamped interior with more chrome trimming

  18. Is there an option to add gps in hrv?
    What about peugeot 3008
    Tnx for your help. .

    1. Peugeot 3008 would be theorhetically in the same class as Forester/CR-V. Haven't driven one though. I'll let you know how it performs once they let me test one.

  21. hi. im planning to purchase my first car. considerations; fuel efficient as it will be mostly use for city drive, i live in a flooded prone area, i only have 15 hours of driving experience. :) any thoughts and no bullying please. im really confused for 3 months now. i have considered subaru XV and montero sports GLX

    ReplyDelete
  22. Fuel efficient, good for flood prone areas- MONTERO. I have a 2010 gls a/t, 85k on the odometer and i have no plans of selling it. Very good family car, perfect for philippine roads. But will buy an HRV this coming months. Magic seats if the Jazz, ground clearance if CRV, engine if Civic (1.8 i-vtec CVT) . Car choice really depends on your needs and experience from your previous cars.

  23. Sir Uly,
between kia sportage at HVR which one will you choose and why. almost the same price at AWD, diesel pa ang sportage. Meron bang hindi maganda sa KIA?

  24. Hi Uly,

I am seriously considering on buying HRV for my family. we have 2 kids (1.5 year old and 3.5 year old). Already had a test drive with HRV and my wife and I liked it. Initially I prefered bigger SUV's (Montero/MU-X) but I know they are also more costly to maintain plus my wife prefers a smaller vehicle for easier maneuver and for the kids too. The only thing I am worried about is the cargo space if it would be able to fit our strollers and stuffs. Do you think this would be a good vehicle for a small family?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Same scenario. I prefer MU-X / Trailblazer but as soon as I saw this HR-V, it seems a better option knowing that it is Honda. We currently use Civic FD and we are very satisfied with it's performance. We will only use the new HR-V for work, weekend get-away for a family of 3 adults and a 4 year old kid. Same worries about the cargo space but good thing for us is that we no longer carry the stroller. My wife prefers it also for easier maneuvers on the busy streets of Makati. It is somehow a good upgrade from Civic. It's like buying a hatchback-mini-CR-V with a taste of Civic and Techie Jazz.

  25. was planning to buy mux (because the new models of montero and fortuner are not out yet) and then i saw the hrv..now i cannot decide which one. some say a diesel engine is more expensive to maintain though its fuel is much cheaper. i am driving a 14 y/o casa maintained civic, it still runs well but i want to be mobile even if i live in a flood prone area..i chose isuzu because diesel engines are their specialty..i had the chance of driving both the montero and crv (i liked them both) and that made it even more difficult..please educate me on the cost of maintenance in the long run..this vehicle will be used mostly for city driving and ocassional out of town trips..am obviously not a car geek..pls help..thank you for your inputs.

  26. Pls help! Can't decide between subaru xv & honda hrv. Sir uly is it true na ang boxer engine ay mas magastos at mahirap imaintain compare to in-line engine. After kami sa performance, fuel efficiency, safety. Kaya pls help us decide kung ikaw po tatanungin sir uly ano po ang marerecommend nyo? Sana po matulungan nyo kami makapagdecide. Salamat!

  28. Looking at the comparison...
Subaru XV = based on a C-segment Impreza,
Mitsubushi ASX = based on the C-segment Lancer platform,
    Honda HR-V = based on a B-segment Jazz/City platform.

Now why didn't they use a Civic platform?

  29. Hi, new driver here. Looking at the hrv vs asx vs xv vs ecosport. Obviously very confused plus now the i20 cross sport has come out. Leaning towards hrv because of the rear parking sensors. Seems like a priority to me but please tell me if that should be negligible?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Parking sensors are negligible because you can have them installed as an aftermarket accessory. They won't even cost more than P 6.5k at a casa, it'll be cheaper outside.

When you buy a car, you should look more like the fundamentals...things you can't get as an accessory. This would mean engine, transmission, interior space, etc. Accessories such as sensors, cameras, navigation systems--they should be secondary to any list.

  30. Sir Uly,

I am planning to buy a car and I m really confused if I should go for HR-v, ASX GSR or wait for the release of the 2016 Montero sports. I am a single lady, I do prefer the SUV since we are living in flood prone area but regarding the specs of the said vehicles, can you please advise me what would be the best 1st car I will buy?

    Thank you

  31. Hello Car Guide PH, been going through your reviews and comment sections. Have to say that they are very informative.

Currently looking at Subaru Forester 2.0i L vs Honda HR-V E.

Young family of 3 needing everyday commute vehicle here in Metro Manila with occasional trips to Tagaytay, Pico de Loro and Anvaya Cove.

Any suggestions and possible alternatives to the 2 models would be appreciated! Thanks and more power!

  32. Hello Gurus,

Totally confused with going for HRV or ASX... Which has more value for money? Few notes, i like the brake hold feature of the HRV, should be very used in city driving... but the ASX is a lot cheaper (100k diff) & has fancy sunroof...Would greatly appreciate your inputs!

    1. I am also chosing between buying an ASX and HRV. But now i got more confuse as i was told that XV is offering a huge discount. I already went to both dealers ( HONDA and MITSU) but i am still confused. I am a single lady who lives in a flood prone area. Would appreciate your help in this! Thanks!!

  33. Meron na bang casa na available ang ASX 2016? Among the three, ASX na lang ang hindi ko nakikita at natetest drive. Confused buyer here. Malaki kasi discount sa ASX. P100k din.

    ASX - mura
HR-V - reliable (I owned civics and CR-V before and wala talagang problema for keeping it for more than 9 years)
XV - gusto ko sana pero dahil sa nabasa ko na oil guzzler pala sya, medyo nagbago na ang isip ko.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have been to 3 Mitsu outlets to try and see an ASX, they all say the same. No showroom models, if you want to see one, or test one, you have to make a reservation to purchase one.
Crazy way to do business, probably go for the XV at the end.

  35. What's the wading depth of the HRV? Is there much difference than a Jazz?
