Honda Cars Philippines Introduces Genre-Bending HR-V (w/ Brochure)

Editor's Note: this is how the Honda HR-V squares up against the competition.

With bold and sporty coupe-like styling, SUV versatility, and Honda’s packaging magic, the all-new HR-V is set to challenge the growing small crossover segment. The HR-V delivers incredible value with a long list of standard features and technologies including 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps with daytime running lights, a push-button engine start/stop, electronic parking brake, rear view camera with multiple views and guidelines, and a 7-inch touchscreen audio system among others.

Available in three trim levels: S, E, and EL, the HR-V is powered by a highly-refined and efficient 1.8-liter 4-cylinder 16-valve SOHC i-VTEC engine producing a peak 141 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 172 Nm of torque at 4,300 rpm. The engine, shared with the Civic, is paired solely to Honda’s seamless and sporty Earth Dreams continuously variable transmission (CVT). The E and EL variants get added driver control via paddle shifters and cruise control.

Developed on a new global platform that also underpins the Jazz, the HR-V utilizes a center-mounted fuel tank layout and re-configurable ULT (Utility, Long, Tall) seats that deliver voluminous interior space along with a flexible cabin featuring multiple seating/cargo modes. With the rear seats up, it has 393 liters of cargo room; and with the 60/40 rear seats folded down, the HR-V has enough luggage space that rivals a mid-sized SUV at 1,665 liters. Aside from giving a more spacious and versatile interior, the HR-V’s platform is lightweight and rigid that helps it deliver excellent fuel economy without any detriment to driving performance. Expansive use of ultra-high strength steel (up to 27 percent of the body) contributes to improved rigidity that enhances collision-protection, handling response, and ride quality.

The HR-V features independent MacPherson struts upfront and a torsion beam rear suspension that not only maximizes rear seating and cargo space, but provides outstanding handling and ride characteristics. The EPS or Electric Power Steering provides a refined and sporty feel while minimizing energy requirements. Four wheel disc brakes are standard across the line as are anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), and hill-start assist (HSA). Plus, it comes with Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) as standard. Unique to the HR-V, is an electric parking brake with automatic brake hold, and 17-inch alloy wheels with 215/55R17 tires. All HR-V models come with dual SRS airbags and ISO FIX child seat anchors as standard with the EL gaining an additional four airbags and rear backup sensors.

The HR-V sporty and dynamic appearance features a solid, coupe-like stance with a powerful tapering face. It has a sporty front grille with Honda’s trademark Solid Wing design. Standard LED headlamps with daytime running lights on the EL model give it an unmistakably techno-vibe, especially at night. It has distinctive side contours with a sharply upswept character line and a deeply sculpted lower body that flows to the tapered rear-end. A shark’s fin antenna gives an uncompromising sense of style while the concealed door handles enhance the HR-V’s coupe-like appearance. At the back, fang-like tail lamp clusters create an unmistakable presence with the EL variant gaining LED guide lamps.

The equally driver-centric and sophisticated interior features an expansive, airy cockpit with an abundance of soft-touch materials and premium detailing punctuated by precise bezels, sophisticated stitch lines, and up-market brushed chrome and piano black highlights. It creates a youthful yet refined vibe. It’s also mighty practical with its Wide-Flow air conditioning that distributes cool air throughout the cabin quickly.  The three-meter driver’s instrument cluster features “floating” illumination rings and an ECO coaching light that rewards fuel-efficient driving with ambient lighting that changes from white to green depending on prevalent driving conditions.

And despite slotting below the CR-V in terms of size, the HR-V is not lacking in terms of creature comfort features. Standard across the line, the HR-V comes with a Smart Entry with push button engine start/stop along with steering wheel audio controls. The E and EL variants come with the added convenience of a multi-information display (MID), a 7-inch touchscreen display audio with USB and HDMI power ports, six speakers, a touch panel automatic climate control, and Bluetooth hands-free that’s compatible with Apple’s Siri. The EL adds a dose of luxury with leather seats.

The Honda HR-V is a vehicle that exceeds expectations and re-defines what a car should be. Built for discerning drivers who live well-rounded lifestyles, it combines different vehicle virtues in a stunning package. It’s also filled with smart, user-friendly features. It’s set to be a big hit among crossover-loving Filipinos. It comes in a range of five colors, the availability of which is dependent of variant: Taffeta White (E & S), Carnelian Red Pearl (E & S), Modern Steel Metallic (all), Ruse Black Metallic (all), Morpho Blue Pearl (E & EL), and White Orchid Pearl (EL only).

Pricing is as follows: P 1,190,000 for the S CVT, P 1,230,000 for the E CVT, and P 1,340,000 for the EL CVT. And for added individuality, Honda is also offering both a Modulo and MUGEN appearance package for the HR-V as well. The E CVT Modulo is pegged at P 1,290,000 while the EL CVT MUGEN is at P 1,500,000.

  2. The higher trim EL is price @ 1.340M that made me think between this HRV & ASX GSR-1.198M after discount. What's your say Sir Uly?

As you knew the GSR don't have much impt. safety features like VSA & HSA & reverse camera but has nice panoramic sunroof & a bigger 2.0L mill.

    1. do you know how much is it for the E Version?

    2. the ASX doesn't have VSA but is has ASC (Active Stability Control) which is essentially the same.

      Delete
    3. ASC is stripped now with the GSR, that's only available before on their high end model. Check the latest brochure of ASX.

    5. The ASX GSR has a reverse camera even on GLS.

    6. It's a tricky part for buyers, usually when they offered lower price or promos & they will stripped everything, reverse camera is nowhere in GSR, this is Mitsu clearance sale as 2016 ASX with an Evo version is looming & exciting to wait with their new bold "Dynamic Shield” front-end design, set to become the new face of the Mitsubishi brand going forward
Hope this will help, don't be fooled with Pinas wise auto dealerships.

  3. If I have much money, not harder to decide just drive one.
HRV is pricey for a FWD only. However every buyer has it's own purpose so for city dweller then HRV or ASX or XV fits well.
My choice is the ASX for long term ownership, Honda is known to be expensive to maintain. ASX fighter jet front grille will not fade as an Evo-like & distinct as only few running on the road.

  4. Sir Uly, is this a good buy for my money. I already have my reservation for HRV E. 1.2M. Do you think matakaw sya sa gasoline or tama lang? My long wait is over i've read all the specs and so far okay nman sya wala lang talaga moonroof. Any disadvantages that you know on this crossover?

    1. Same reply as above. Will get to test the HR-V this week. Will let you know how it performs.

As for lacking moon roof, if you ask my personal opinion, a car is better without a moon roof for two reasons: one, less moving/mechanical parts to maintain so less chance of leaking; two, it doesn't compromise structural rigidity so expect less niggles and rattles if there's no moon roof.

Again, I'll reserve my final verdict once I get to drive it.

    Just sharing--from other forum
    Price -EL- 1.340M----E- 1.230M----S- 1.190
Dislikes --carry-over engine not the Earth Dream, FWD not AWD,
Therefore the price is not right, put under the hood your diesel & will sell like cakes, are you listening Honda Phil?

    1. Parang may mali ata.. With the amount of extra kit you get for the 40k difference between the E and S variants, mukhang wala nang bibili ng S kung ganyan..

    2. Your'e right. The price difference for the base model and mid is just absurd. atleast they should offer a manual for the base to make it cheaper atleast. And the Honda diesel weve all been waiting for still not coming huh. Wonder what is their reason for not bringing diesel angine here since our diesel is much cheaper than gas

  7. Hi,

I was surprised to see you mentioned that the engine is a DOHC, but since I am expecting the HRV, I know for certain it will have a SOHC engine. The brochure says SOHC too. Just a minor correction though. I will wait for you review and hoping for real world FC posted soon. Hoping the engine will not be underpowered as this have the same engine like in the Civic.

    1. Yup. SOHC shared with the Civic. Corrected already.

  8. No manual tranny offered? Why you do this Honda!

    1. Seriously, who needs a manual these days with hellish Metro Manila traffic.

    2. Real men? hahaha

      Delete
    3. So men who drives an automatic is a fake? Come on people don't be so foolish with your "real men drives stick" perception. With the traffic in the Metro I would never consider driving manual tranny again.

      Delete
    4. UV/Taxi drivers drives a manual almost everyday on "hellish" traffic. U don't hear them whining about driving stick shift on metro traffic. While u only have to drive going and coming home from work. Matics are lame!

      Delete
    5. Its called preference. You dont get to call someone who prefers driving AT not a "real man". Grow up.

      Delete
    6. Exactly, "preference." So why question people looking for a manual tranny? Also, not all people who buy vehicles are from Manila and have to go through the "hellish" traffic everyday.

    7. Grow up, man.

    8. "Oh look at me i drive a manual car! Im a real man" oh please.

  9. Right u are Mick--SOHC.
Sluggish acceleration Honda CVT same with ASX & XV.
And this 1.8L lacks the oommpps but a lot better than Korean cheapo.

  12. Launch is cancelled.
    Pricing as communicated below:

    Base - P1.19mn
    Mid - P1.23mn
    Top - P1.34mn

The difference between the base and mid does not make sense.

  14. Waiting for the cx3s launch...if priced right it will give the hrv a run for its money....although hrv more practical interior

    1. Expect CX3 stratospheric price, it's proven Mazda Skyactiv technology as evidenced why Toyota agreed for a long term partnership with Mazda.
A number of future Toyota cars will be powered by Skyactiv.

    2. Waiting for the CX-3 also. Will wait for its comparison with the HR-V.

  16. HR-V E variant @ 1.23M or XV 2.0i @ 1.298M less 100k. Can't decide which one. We have 2 Honda cars right now and I'm familiar with maintenance costs. Not sure if Subaru maintenance costs are higher or same as any Japanese brand. Of course AWD is nice but would consume more fuel in city driving, I think. Interior space I think the HR-V wins. Comments?

  18. When you drive a honda, everybody else would envy you. Especially if your honda is a top model. You will leave them behind, any brand, gnashing their teeth in expressway or in climbing mountains, when you want too. And leave all the rest, over heated or sira, alongside roads, during lengthy travel going to the province during long holidays. Point is, people who have the brains and money buy honda for obvious reasons. If you can't afford it, just keep quiet about it and setlte for the rest. Next time, baka swertehin ka naman na may pambili. Ganun lang yun. No bashing, inggitan, siraan, or whatsoever.
