Toyota Updates Yaris for 2018 with Added Tech, Safety Features (w/ Specs)

Toyota Motor Philippines is closing the year by introducing a midcycle refresh of its Yaris sub-compact hatchback in time for 2018. The 2018 Vios-based 5-door hatchback sports refresher aesthetics inside and out as well as additional convenience and safety features.

As far as refreshes go, the 2018 Yaris goes very far. The most prominent design feature, the handle bar moustache grille, is now gone. Replacing it is a more rounded front-end with large lower grille reminiscent of a smiling face. Its “eyes” are also new—rounded halogen headlights while the “dimples” house the front fog lights, which are now standard across the range. And while the blacked-out C-pillar remains, the rear tailgate, bumpers, and taillamps are all new. A shark’s fin antenna and new alloy wheel designs complete the changes.

For 2018, the G variant bids goodbye and replacing it is the new S variant. The 1.5 S is differentiated from the lesser 1.3 E variant thanks to its projector-type headlights, red accents in its grille, LED daytime running lights, side mirror-mounted turn indicators, and rear LED taillights.

Under the hood, the Yaris continues to offer a choice between two engines, both of which remain unchanged. Offering a 4-cylinder double overhead cam with Dual VVT-i layout, the The 1NR-FE engine in the 1.3 E generates 98 horsepower and 123 Nm of torque while the 2NR-FE in the 1.5 S does 107 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque. The 1.3 E is available in both manual (5-speed) and automatic flavors, while the 1.5 S is available solely with an automatic with changeable drive modes: ECO and SPORT, and paddle shifters. The automatic variants use a CVT.

The rest of the mechanical package remains unchanged for 2018 as well. The Yaris continues to rides on front Independent MacPherson Struts and a rear Torsion Beam Axle suspension. The 1.5 S has disc brakes (ventilated in the front) on all four corners, while the 1.3 E has rear drums. The tire size is also unchanged at 185/60 R 15.

Like its exterior, the 2018 Yaris gets a substantial upgrade inside. Apart from the new dashboard design, it gets new gauges (with controllable illumination) and a 7-inch touchscreen display audio system with Bluetooth, Voice Control, and Weblink. It’s also said to be compatible with Apple CarPlay. The 1.5 S impresses with standard features that include a smart keyless entry with push-start system, automatic climate control, additional speakers (a total of 6), and power folding mirrors.

Committed to safety, the 2018 Yaris is also equipped with a wide array of safety features. Standard on both the 1.3 E and 1.5 S are 7 airbags, anti-lock brakes, and vehicle stability control. The stability control system also incorporates a Hill Start Assist function as well.

The 2018 Yaris is now available for pre-orders at all Toyota dealerships with the following prices: 1.3 E M/T – P 825,000; 1.3 E A/T – P 877,000; and 1.5 S – P 1,006,000. Customer deliveries start by January 2018.

Available colors are: Freedom White, Attitude Black, Orange Metallic (all variants), Thermalyte, Red Mica Metallic (1.3 E), Gray Metallic, and Citrus Mica Metallic (1.5 S).

    1. Hence our disclaimer in the article itself. The spec sheet though that was provided to us indicated a 4-speed AT.

    2. Well the CVT is actually more boring than the 4-Speed gear box i would prefer the 4 speed kaso new tech at mas maganda nga naman rin kasi siya sa fuel efficiency

  4. Who the hell would buy this incompetent subcompact from Toyota? The Honda City and Mazda 2 are far the better choices. It's 2018 and 4AT, fabric seats and an ugly design plus bland interior for more than 1m? Toyota is fooling a lot of willing fools. And you buy this due to reliability and available spare parts? Every modern car today is as reliable as Toyota as long as you follow the proper pms schedule and while Toyota's spare parts are widely available, the price is similar to other brands. So in the end, you gain nothing. Disregard those fat pig auto journalists that tell you that you can never go wrong with a Toyota, and their peace of mind bs. You'll end up with an inferior product.

    1. really? inferior? at the end of the day Toyota is still selling well worldwide!

    2. You might be right in saying that the Honda City and Mazda 2 are better choices. But calling a Toyota an inferior product, I don't think so. Toyota may be the safe and boring choice (though nowadays they are pushing for more exciting cars) but they are still very reliable and easy to maintain.

      Delete
    3. They sell well because people see them as a safe bet which it really is. Actually, any jap car is as reliable as a Toyota given proper maintenance and easy to maintain as well. What is the difference in maintaining a Honda Jazz and a Toyota Yaris?

Anyway, I have to give them credit for the facelifted Altis. It looks better now but this Yaris is the opposite of that. Also, if you compare it's equipment level to the Jazz and especially to the Mazda 2, it is inferior. Have you taken a look inside the 2017 mazda 2? It's light years away from the new Yaris.

    4. The Mazda 2 Hatchback and Sedan looks bare and the prices of it are ridiculous! The New Yaris is bigger, better and loaded with safety equipment.

Honda overpriced the top of the line Jazz.

      Delete
    5. All are pretty overpriced. Once you reach 1M, you can already consider compact cars like the altis and civic. Hell you can even get the base ford focus with a 1.5L turbo already.

      Delete
    6. Looks bare? Personally, I don't like the wheels on the V+ model but the RS and the premium series are drop dead gorgeous. If you compare equipment levels and the quality, the Mazda 2 trumps over the Toyota Yaris miles away. That said, I commend Toyota for it's suite of airbags. However, comparing the overall value and quality, the better one is the Mazda 2. Seriously, how is the Yaris any better as a product compared to the Mazda 2 other than the full suite of airbags? Outdated 4AT, weak engine, ugly exterior, cheap interior, fabric seats, no LED headlights, inferior fuel injection system, no telescopic adjustment, no auto headlamps, fake sporty pretensions, etc. If you personally felt and drove the Mazda 2, you'll never want the Yaris ever.

I agree that the jazz totl is overpriced, due to Honda's pricing strategy to price their cars slightly more expensive than competitors but it offers tons of space and practicality than the "bigger and better" Yaris.

  7. Have to give credit to Toyota for putting at least 6 airbags across the range. This started with the current Corolla Altis. Most carmakers only have 6 airbags on their top of the line sub compacts and compacts. On the opposite end is Nissan. Top of the line Xtrail, Navarra, Sylphy, and Almera only have 2 airbags.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hopefully this will start the trend to equip ALL cars with ALL available safety features. It's somewhat wrong in my view, that you're missing some safety tech just because you can't afford the range topper.

      Delete
    2. I also do hope other manufacturers will follow Toyota in the safety features like all around airbags across the range. Other tech & convenience features like back up camera, touch screen entertainment system and the like we can make up to it by way of aftermarket customization, but for the safety features its hard to make compromises.

Speaking of Nissan, I was overwhelmed by the tech they put in the Xtrail, features that can normally be found in cars costing 2M or more, but was disappointed to know that it only has 2 airbags.

  11. So the lowly Yaris has a touchscreen and at least 6 airbags, while the 2.3 million Sorento has a 1990s radio and only has 2 airbags. Value?

    1. I also wonder why the Koreans still choose to equip their cars with old school radio. Not a deal breaker but a bit hard to accept. Imagine even Mirage, Wigo etc offer touch screen audio and cars costing over a million don't.

      Delete
    2. Guess economics factor in too. The Koreans don't enjoy the same perks as the Japanese do. And to keep their price within striking distance of common Juans, the infotainment, alloys and to an extent, safety systems, are the first to go.
