Look at the Shinkansen-Inspired 2021 Toyota Sienna MPV

MPVs may be falling out of favor for some buyers, but Toyota is keen to continue in the segment with the all-new, fourth-generation Sienna. Designed, engineered, and built for the US market, the 2021 Sienna comes with a standard gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain.

Built atop the TNGA-K platform (same as the RAV4 and Venza), the Sienna is a ground-up re-design enabling the design team to explore new themes. Upfront, the fascia is inspired by the Japanese Shinkansen bullet train while the rest of the body is more sculpted—a fresh departure from the boxy MPVs on the road today. Towards the back, the taillights are made to flow smoothly thanks to thin LED lighting while a deeply sculpted spoiler is made possible by a new molded resin process.

Calling the Sienna a “swagger wagon,” the 2021 model takes a more emotional design to its interior. The result is the “Bridge Console.” It’s positioned high between the driver and front passenger, giving it a feel of personal space, while also promoting better ergonomics. Features wireless charging, 7 USB ports, 18 cup holders, and a 12-speaker JBL sound system. It can also be optioned with an onboard vacuum cleaner and refrigerator.

In some configurations, the Sienna will maintain available seating for eight, while other models can be equipped with second-row captain’s chairs with optional pop-up footrests, depending on trim level. The second-row captain's chairs are able to slide up to 635 mm rearward, enabling the passenger to stretch out in comfort when the third row is unoccupied. Speaking of third-row passengers, Toyota will carry over its Driver Easy Speak feature, which uses the audio system to carry the driver's voice to the rear speakers, allowing rear passengers to better hear the driver without the necessity of raising voices.

Powering the 2021 Sienna is a 2.5-liter gasoline-electric hybrid. It delivers a combined 243 horsepower and an estimated 14 km/L combined city/highway mileage making it a benchmark among MPVs. Toyota has also made available an optional all-wheel drive variant making this the only MPV with a hybrid powertrain and AWD setup.

Toyota hasn’t revealed the Sienna’s pricing yet, but they’ll announce it closer to its sell date which is expected, for the U.S. market, later in the year.
