Review: 2019 Toyota RAV4 4x2 Limited

To some degree, the RAV4 is representative of where Toyota is as a company. When the marque first launched in 1994, it introduced the concept of the compact crossover, a reminder of Toyota’s ingenious engineering and marketing ways. With the second-generation model, it turned a sporty leaf, a perfect metaphor for Toyota’s sporty ways at the time. By the time the third- and fourth-generation models rolled in, the RAV4 lost its way, becoming more analgesic than exciting. But when Akio Toyoda declared that Toyota must make better cars, the RAV4 responded in a very big way.

So Why Did the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Get A New Engine While the 2019 Camry Did Not?

The Philippine launch of the 2019 RAV4 opened some questions, not about the RAV4 per se, but about something launched last December: the 2019 Camry. Given both of these models are riding on the Toyota New Global Architecture or TNGA platform, why did Toyota Motor Philippines decide to give its executive sedan a carryover powertrain while the compact SUV gets the new-generation one?

Review: 2016 Toyota RAV4 4WD Premium

It’s hard what to make of the RAV4. What first started as Toyota’s sole crossover in the late 1990’s has now become the middle child in the Japanese automaker’s growing SUV family. It’s been forced to swagger up, now becoming the Camry of Toyota’s SUV line-up when it isn’t even carrying enough trimmings to be considered dapper. And now, for the first time ever, its price point has breached the psychological two-million mark for this top-range 4WD. Is Toyota losing its mind or is it finally giving the often-ignored RAV4 the attention it deserves?

Today, it’s one of the most hotly contested segments in the automotive industry and every single car manufacturer has one. However, before everyone else got into the fray, there’s one that successfully weathered the ups and downs, and continues to be sought-after: the Toyota RAV4.
