Kia Shows Off the 2021 Sonet Small SUV

Kia has finally taken the wraps off its new small SUV: the Sonet. To be sold in India first, the Korean carmaker has recently confirmed that it’ll make its way to other global markets soon thereafter.

The production version of the Sonet bears a strong resemblance to the concept version first shown early this year. Engineered to fit into India’s unique length-based taxation structure, the Sonet measures less than 4 meters in overall length. Yet, it’s loaded to the brim with features such as LED headlights and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Much like the Seltos, the Sonet is also offered in a sportier GT Line trim. The GT Line receives red accents on several exterior panels as well as a sportier-looking cabin.

Oh, and speaking of the cabin, it’s made to appeal to the audiophile with an available 7-speaker Bose sound system. And because it’s marketed to a younger audience, it’s also fitted with sound mood lamps—a feature also seen in the Soul and the Seltos. A large 10.25-inch touchscreen controls the infotainment system and aside from smartphone connectivity, it also offers wireless smartphone charging. Other luxury features include a sunroof and ventilated front seats. For the driver, there’s a 4.2-inch advance color instrument cluster.

With a platform shared with the Hyundai Venue, the Sonet is powered by a choice between a 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, a normally-aspirated 1.2-liter gasoline engine, and a 1.5-liter diesel engine. Depending on the engine, the available gearboxes are a 5- or 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, 7-speed dual clutch, and even the new clutch-less iMT.

And despite its entry-level positioning, the Sonet will pack a full list of safety features from 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, tire pressure monitoring, and even stability control. Given the rise of advanced air filtration systems in cars, it will also have a smart pure air purifier with virus protection.

Pricing will be revealed closer to its launch in India.
