The Mazda3 Gets "Blink and You'll Miss It" Upgrades for 2021

Mazda has given its compact sedan/hatchback, the Mazda3 some “blink and you’ll miss it” updates for 2021. Though very minor, the carmaker says it’s all about further refining the car’s overall package.

The chief among them are new powertrains. The first is an improvement to its revolutionary Skyactiv-X engine. The compression ignition gasoline engine (Mazda calls it SPCCI) features improved supercharging and mild electrification technology.

In Japan, this new engine is dubbed e-Skyactiv X (note the revised location of the hyphen) and ups the overall output to 190 horsepower (up 10) and 240 Nm of torque (up 16 Nm) compared to its non-electrified counterpart. Adding further distinction to these models, they now get “Skyactiv X” badges on the side fenders.

If a gasoline engine isn’t your thing, Mazda has also improved on the Skyactiv-D diesel engine in the Mazda3. For 2021, engineers have recalibrated the engine giving it more top-end power: 130 horsepower (up 14 horsepower). Torque remains the same at 270 Nm.

While these changes won’t make it to the Philippines (both the Skyactiv-D and Skyactiv-X aren’t available powertrain-wise), the revised handling bits might arrive here as part of the 2021 package.

According to Mazda, they’ve improved the coil springs and shock absorbers on the Mazda3 allowing it to suppress road surfaces in a smoother manner. This should also help improve driving dynamics as well. Engineers have also increased the operating range of the Cruising Traffic Support to a higher speed and tweaked the radar-based adaptive cruise control for smoother characteristics.

The 2021 Mazda3 also debuts a Japan-only special edition: a Mazda3 100th Anniversary Special Edition but decked in Soul Red Crystal. According to the carmaker, this one celebrates the Mazda3’s win as the World Car Design of the Year and comes with a commemorative ornament (the customer can opt not to install it).

The revised Mazda3 range starts arriving in Japanese showrooms starting today (for the 1.5- and 2.0-liter variants), while the new e-Skyactiv X and Skyactiv-D variants arrive in January 2021.
