Suzuki PH Could Source the Jimny SUV from India

Suzuki is now producing the Jimny sub-compact off-roader in India—and in left-hand drive no less. At a time when demand for the small SUV has resulted in long wait times, this news is certainly welcome for those who’re desperate to get their hands on a unit.

Launched in 2018, the current-generation Jimny emerged as a popular choice not just for its off-road prowess, but its curbside appeal too. Among the awards it has won was the 2019 World Urban Car of the Year.

The first 184 units produced at the Maruti-Suzuki plant left India and is now on the way to its first export market: Latin America. After which, Suzuki has plans to offer the Indian-made Jimny to the Middle East and African markets as well.

Though the Philippines wasn’t mentioned, there could be a chance that future Jimny units would be sourced from India. If that is the case, it may also open the doors for the Philippines to get the five-door version of the Jimny which is rumored to start production six months after the start of the three-door version. Currently, Suzuki Philippines sources the S-Presso and Dzire from India.

If Suzuki Philippines does decide to bring in the Jimny from India, there is nothing to worry about when it comes to its build quality.

Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said that quality from the Indian plant will be indistinguishable from the one made in Japan. “The Jimny will fulfill aspirations of customers throughout the world. The Jimny manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Gurugram plant shares the same specification as the export models produced at the Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Kosai plant in Japan. We are confident we will be able to enhance our overall exports.”
