Honda is set to trim underperforming models, and that includes the Odyssey MPV. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, this move is all part of Honda’s global realignment to focus on electric vehicles.
Aside from the Odyssey, Honda is set to cull the Legend luxury sedan and the Clarity fuel cell car as well.
The report cites weak sales for the Odyssey which is losing out big time to the Toyota Alphard, especially in the Japanese domestic market where it sells majority of the MPV. This is despite a refresh done this year.
Meanwhile, despite being the first to offer Level 3 autonomous driving technology (only available for lease), Legend sales haven’t really done so well. From its peak of 20,000 units in 1991, Honda sold only 216 units last year.
Surprisingly, Honda is also pulling the plug on its Clarity fuel cell vehicle. The report cites its high price tag coupled with a limited supply of hydrogen-fueling stations that dampened demand for the model.
All three models are assembled at the Sayama plant near Tokyo which is slated to close by the Fiscal Year ending March 2022. Honda has decided not to move their production elsewhere once the plant has shut.
