Subaru To Show A High-Performance Future Without Its Boxer Engine

Subaru understands that one day, they’ll have to eventually give up on its famed horizontally-opposed (aka boxer) engine as the world moves to the electric era. The world’s first glimpse of that future is this: the STI E-RA Concept.

To be shown alongside the WRX STI Performance Concept, the STI E-RA Concept is, in Subaru’s words, a “a study model for future motorsport vehicles towards a carbon neutral era.”

At this moment, their official teaser is light on info, and the only photo (see lead) shows the E-RA Concept shrouded in smoke. There are some key features that one could make out though and this includes the C-shaped DRLs and a glowing STI badge (curiously, it doesn’t seem to have the Subaru badge present).

Subaru’s done well to hide the E-RA Concept’s body style so speculations are all over the place on what it could be: a rally-inspired sedan, a two-door sportscar, or a high-riding crossover.

If Subaru does decide to showcase the flexibility of the e-TNGA platform which it co-developed with Toyota they’d probably go the sedan route solely because they already have the Solterra which is an all-electric crossover.

Whatever the case, the wait won’t be too long as the STI E-RA Concept will make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January.
