Porsche Confirms All-Electric Boxster As Third EV Model

More than 80 percent of newly-sold Porsche vehicles will be fully electric by 2030—that’s the goal announced by the carmaker’s CEO Oliver Blume at their annual press conference.

After the Taycan and Macan, the next model to become exclusively electric is the 718 Boxster and this will start from 2025. Porsche already hinted at an electric 718 Boxster/Cayman since it unveiled the Mission R last year, but this is the first-time executives have confirmed speculations about its third EV model.

A hybrid version of the iconic Porsche 911 will also be made available, but Porsche didn’t specify when the production hybrid, which will use a self-charging hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid, would begin. Questions of how many variants of the 911 might get the hybrid treatment were left unanswered.

Blume said Porsche is also weighing the possibility of joining Formula One, though no final decision has been made.

The carmaker is also in talks with Apple to expand its cooperation beyond the U.S. tech giant’s CarPlay feature. The CEO confirmed that there are “several” additional projects in the pipeline with Apple, which has been working on a self-driving car project for years.
