Toyota Halts Half Of Japan Production Due To Quake Damage

Toyota Motor Corporation is suspending operations at more than half its assembly across Japan, and is studying potential disruption to overseas production because of supply chain interruptions triggered by a large earthquake that rattled the country last week.

Starting today, Toyota is halting production for three days starting next week on 18 lines at 11 factories in Japan, out of a total of 28 lines in 14 factories operated Japan-wide. In effect, they will lose about 20,000 vehicles of output from the quake-related shutdowns.

The latest suspensions will reduce output of Toyota models including the RAV4 and Land Cruiser which is already in very short supply. Also impacted are the Lexus LS and IS sedans, RC and LC coupes, and NX crossover.

Toyota’s shutdown comes just a few days after it cut output from April to June in the face of growing supply chain uncertainty and the lingering impact of the global semiconductor shortage and COVID-19 pandemic.

Toyota slashed global output in April by 17 percent to 750,000 units. That outlook did not account for potential disruption from the earthquake or the war in Ukraine.
