The All-New Toyota Crown Is A Sedan With SUV-Like Ground Clearance

Toyota is reinventing the flagship Crown model into a family of vehicles that will meet the needs of a diversified global market. It will be rolled out in over 40 countries and regions with Japan being the first market to get it by around the fourth quarter of this year.

The “Crown for a new era” has four members: Sedan-type, Estate-type, Sport-type, and Crossover-type. The Crown Crossover-type is unique in that it combines the styling elements of a sedan and SUV. The Sport is a crossover with a coupe-like roofline, while the sedan is a new formal design meant for the chauffeur-driven, and the Estate which is traditional crossover.

The Crown Crossover is the first model set to be introduced, and in terms of styling, it’s meant to convey strength befitting a flagship vehicle for Toyota’s new era. The headlights and taillights are connected from left to right into a single unit, while the side is free from typical character lines. Large diameter tires fill in the wheel wells. Also, by applying innovations to the body structure, Toyota has managed to push out the wheels to the outer edges of the body giving its stance a sense of stability.

The all-new Crown, in this Crossover body style, measures in at 4,930 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,540 mm in height. Wheelbase is at a generous 2,850 mm.

Inside, the five-seater Crown Crossover uses a predominantly horizontal motif that focuses on intuitive operation. Toyota has paid close attention to the choice of materials using “Warm Steel” as accents throughout the cabin.

Powering the all-new Crown Crossover is a new hybrid system that mates a turbocharged 2.4-liter with an electric motor. The combustion engine enough is good for 272 horsepower, but add a 83 horsepower front and 80 horsepower rear motor, and the combined output climbs to about 340 horsepower. Meanwhile, Toyota is also offering its highly-efficient 2.5-liter hybrid system good for a combined 215 horsepower (186 horsepower from the internal combustion engine plus 119 horsepower from the front and 54 horsepower from the rear motor).

The 2.4-liter T24A-FTS is mated to a 6-speed automatic, while the A25A-FXS is mated to a CVT. Either way, power is routed through all four wheels using Toyota’s E-Four all-wheel drive system with an electric rear axle (the internal combustion engine only powers the front wheels).

As always, the all-new Crown is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense with the most advanced functions. The range of accidents it can respond, Toyota says, to has been expanded even further, enabling enjoyable driving with peace of mind.

Toyota is targeting to sell about 3,200 Crown Crossovers per month in Japan. Pricing starts at 4,350,000 yen (P 1.763 million) and tops out at 6,050,000 yen (P 2.453 million). Details about the rest of the Crown family will come closer to their respective launches.

  6. Just like the size of a Toyota Camry engine but with a different battery, turbo, multiple motors, eAxle, high tech, and many luxury features. We need this for executives.

  9. The Honda fangheys would still say it's not prestigious because "pinang-tataxi lang" sa Japan at Hong Kong yung Crown. Buti pa raw Civic at City hindi. Wahahaha. Riceboy logic.
