Should Toyota Build This All-Electric Wigo?

In April of this year, Toyota surprised everyone by unveiling an Innova EV Concept at the Indonesian International Motor Show or IIMS. Now, at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), they’ve done it again, only this time, they’ve used the Wigo.

The Wigo, or at least its sibling car from Daihatsu, the Ayla, received an EV powertrain transplant for the show. It swaps its 3-cylinder internal combustion for an 80-horsepower electric motor. It also loses its fuel tank and spare tire for a 32-kWh battery.

For its EV transformation, the Wigo/Ayla also receives a new front end (EVs don’t require the same amount of cooling compared to traditional combustion engine cars) and a LED light bar that stretches all the way to the logo. Over to the sides, it also swaps its side view mirrors for cameras for better aerodynamics, larger aero wheels, and closes out its rear doors for a sleeker three-door look. At the back, the taillights have also been re-shaped with LED lighting.

Inside, it gets a digital meter cluster and a revised center stack too.

For now, a fully electrified low-cost car such as the Wigo or Ayla may seem like a far out concept, but it’s no secret that Daihatsu’s parent company, Toyota is looking to build EVs in Indonesia. In fact, the Japanese carmaker is set to invest close to 27 trillion rupiah (roughly 2 billion US dollars) over the next five years to build electrified vehicles there.

    1. Our government needs to offer federal tax credits like in other countries to convince motorists to shift to EV.

  2. Ironic that Meralco is promoting EVs here when the price of their electricity is a large reason why car manufacturers do not choose to build their plants here!
