Philippine-Bound BYD Atto 3 Scores 5-Star Rating At Euro NCAP

BYD’s European charge gains momentum as one of the first vehicle it intended to sell there, the Atto 3, scored a perfect five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

The Chinese all-electric SUV scored a 91 percent in Adult Occupancy Protection, 89 percent in Child Occupant Protection, 69 percent in Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 74 percent in Safety Assist Technology.

According to the Euro NCAP, the passenger compartment of the Atto 3 remained stable in the frontal offset crash test with dummy numbers demonstrating good protection, particularly of the knees and femurs. Moreover, this level of protection is provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions. However, in the more severe side pole impact, protection of the chest was rated as weak, based measured values of rib compression. Still, BYD was able to come up with a countermeasure to limit the extent to which a body is thrown to the other side when it is hit from the far side.

The five-star Euro NCAP rating of the Atto 3 bodes well for BYD.

Just last week, German car rental company Sixt says it has committed to buying 100,000 EVs from the Chinese carmaker in the coming years. Under the first stage of the agreement, Sixt will order several thousand BYD EVs, the first of which will be available to customers in Europe in the fourth quarter of this year.

BYD is seeking to establish a presence in Europe and will roll out vehicles in Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the U.K. They plan to sell the Atto 3 as well as the Tang crossover and Han sedan.

BYD Philippines has also revealed plans to sell the Atto 3 locally.
