BMW Maintains Position As World's Best-Selling Premium Brand

BMW has managed maintain its position as the world’s number one premium brand by selling a total of 2,100,692 units.

The figure is down 5.1 percent and this is due to headwinds faced by the brand from supply bottlenecks, China’s pandemic lockdowns, and the war in Ukraine. Per BMW, the impact was significant in the first six months of 2022. Sales, however, gradually picked up in the second half, posting even a 10.6 percent growth in the fourth quarter (651,798 units).

BMW sales its sales were driven by the strong growth in its electrified vehicle offerings which reached 372,956 units. Pushing its sales upward are the likes of the BMW X1, iX1, i4, iX, and i7 models.

An all-electric version of the 5 Series, called the i5, will join the line-up this year.

With its 50th anniversary milestone celebrated in 2022, BMW’s high-performance BMW M division managed to record a growth of 8.4 percent—with total sales reaching 177,257 units. Driving sales upward were the likes of the M3 and M4, as well as the M derivatives of its X models.

When it comes to its Motorrad division, a total of 202,895 motorcycles and scooters were delivered—the highest in the company’s history. This equates to a 4.4 percent increase year-on-year.

Looking at the year ahead, BMW is optimistic. They’ve set a target of having 15 percent of their total sales coming from fully-electric vehicles in 2023.
