2024 BMW 5 Series: This Is It

BMW has thankfully resisted the temptation to go bonkers with their all-new 5 Series. Instead of going with idiotic features such as a selfie camera and built-in TikTok (yeah, we’re talking about you, Mercedes-Benz E-Class), the 5 Series steps up with a digitized form of luxury that was first pioneered by the current 7 Series / i7.

The all-new 5 Series features a clean design language that emphasizes presence. Compared to its most immediate predecessor, the “G60” has grown by 97 mm (5,060 mm) in length, 32 mm (1,900 mm) in width, and 36 mm (1,515 mm) in height. Its wheelbase is now longer by 20 mm to 2,995 mm.

Upfront, BMW has gone with an almost upright face with the wider kidney grille now protruding a bit more compared to the twin headlights with LED elements. At the side, the 5 Series now features flush-mounted door openers, black side skirts, and an embossed number “5” at the base of the C-pillar. At the back, the same upright treatment has been done to the taillights which happen to keep their L-shape design.

As expected of a luxury sedan, the all-new 5 Series features generous space and enough creature comfort features to make short work of long-distance drives. However, the focus here is to provide an advanced digital experience which can be experienced with the new interface. The BMW Curved Display—12.3-inches for the gauges and 14.9 inches for the center control display house the latest BMW operating system that lessens physical buttons. From there, the steering wheel itself has been redesigned with haptic feedback on the control panels. An optional Interaction Bar—a backlit crystalline-like bar that extends the entire width of the instrument panel includes touch-sensitive controls.

Though leather remains a core option for the all-new 5 Series, BMW is now offering a fully vegan interior as an option as well. This encompasses not just the seats, but the dashboard, door panels, and even the steering wheel.

BMW is also keeping a choice of electrified combustion or a battery electric powertrains for the all-new 5 Series. A 48-volt mild hybrid comes standard on both the gas- and diesel-fed versions. The range starts with the 520i and its 208 horsepower and 330 Nm output. Next up, the 520d offers 197 horsepower and 400 Nm. For markets outside Europe, BMW will offer more four- and six-cylinder powertrains supplemented by plug-in hybrid variants and a new inline-6 diesel.

When it comes to pure EV powertrains, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive features 601 horsepower and 820 Nm. With power split between the two axles, it produces all-wheel drive. 0 to 100 km/h is done in just 3.8 seconds, while top speed is at 230 km/h. For those who don’t need that much power, the i5 eDrive40 is also available. This version is purely rear-wheel drive and its 340 horsepower, 430 Nm output is enough for a 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.0 seconds, and a top speed of 193 km/h.

In both BEV versions, the all-new 5 Series uses an 81.2-kWh battery enough for a maximum cruising range between 455 to 516 kilometers (i5 M60 xDrive) or 497 to 582 kilometers (i5 eDrive40). A “Max Range” mode further boosts range by up to 25 percent by limiting power and speed, and deactivating certain comfort functions. In terms of charging, the i5’s 205 kW architecture means it can go from 10 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

With the longest wheelbase in its segment and widened tracks, the all-new 5 Series can be speced with an adaptive suspension with electronically-controlled shock absorbers, integral active steering, and even active roll stabilization with active roll comfort.

In terms of autonomous driving features, the 5 Series comes with expanded features including hands-free highway driving. With the active lane change system, the car can suggest a lane change, and the driver can confirm by simply looking at the exterior mirror.

The all-new BMW 5 Series goes on sale by October 2023 (market depending) and will be produced initially at the BMW Dingolfing plant in Germany.

  1. Are the kidney grilles fake?

    1. Not for the ICE version, but for the electric one the opening is likely closed off for aero purposes. Then again, the exterior differences between the two are minor and according to BMW that's deliberate.

    2. Probably for the i5 versions. The grille just appears to be chrome black with vertical silver accents(to form the kidney grille design) , and with a front facing camera.

    1. Better than the E-Class, I think. But yeah...I think the Germans have basically lost the plot at this point. But that's what people want nowadays.
