Philippine Specs Of First-Ever Toyota Yaris Cross Revealed In Government Paperwork

Just a few days after the launch of the all-new Wigo and a few weeks after the launch of the all-new (Innova) Zenix, things aren’t slowing down over at Toyota Motor Philippines. Their next launch? The first-ever Yaris Cross.

There’s no doubt that Toyota Motor Philippines wanted to keep the existence of this product a well-guarded secret, but publicly available homologation paperwork at the LTO shows us the general specs of their new compact crossover. You can check the paperwork in question below.

Filed just last July 14, the first-ever Yaris Cross is confirmed to be packing a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. Since there’s no mention of “hybrid” in the paperwork, we can assume this could mean the 2NR-VE engine found in Yaris Cross models launched throughout the ASEAN region. Used also in the Vios, this double overhead cam dual VVT-i unit will help the Yaris Cross produce 106 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. Its sole transmission would be a Continuously Variable Transmission.

Aside from the engine, the LTO documentation reveals the Yaris Cross’ wheel and tire size for the Philippine market; and they’re beefy at 215/55R18 for both the front and rear ends. In addition, the paperwork reveals the general dimensions:
  • Overall Length: 431 cm (4,310 mm)
  • Overall Width: 177 cm (1,770 mm)
  • Overall Height: 161.5 cm (1,615 mm)
  • Wheelbase: 262 cm (2,620 mm)
  • Ground Clearance: 26 cm (260 mm)
  • Curb Weight: 1,250 kg
  • Net Capacity: 350 kg
  • Gross Vehicle Weight: 1,600 kg
At this point, the rest of the specs is a mystery, but it’s very likely that Toyota Motor Philippines is positioning the Yaris Cross to fend off against the Chinese crossover invasion, while also competing against the likes of the Honda HR-V and Nissan Kicks e-Power as well. If that’s the case, expect pricing to start at about P 1.2-million, going up to P 1.6-million.

Given the generous wheel and tire package already confirmed, it’s safe to assume that Toyota will be equipping the Yaris Cross to the brim with other features as well. If it’s to be competitive against the Chinese crossovers, it should come packing features such as a panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

With Toyota now receiving the required homologation of the first-ever Yaris Cross, its local launch is surely imminent. Watch this space as we find out more.

  1. I wish we could have here the real Yaris Cross. Not the Yaris Cross na "hilaw"

    1. Agreed but Toyota PH decided to bring in this to save costs as the TNGA-based Yaris Cross is made in Japan and not in ASEAN member countries so the Philippines doesn't have yet a FTA with Japan (I'm not sure if they already have one, should I be wrong).

    2. We have JPEPA but it only covers vehicles with a displacement of 3.0-liter and above.

    5. Out of the loop, what did kuchi selling well do?

    6. @Ulysses Ang I see. It would be nice if the gov't amends it to also cover 1.5-liter and above.

    7. The reason why JPEPA only covers vehicles 3.0-liter and above is to protect local manufacturing. If they removed the displacement restriction, that'll kill off all local assembly.

      Delete
    8. ^Which local Toyota assembly would JPEPA knock-off in case they remove the conditions? Innova? Vios?

    9. Maybe indirectly since they don't have 3.0-liter displacements.

BUT, given how we've signed trade agreements with ASEAN, China, and soon Korea, perhaps it's a good time to re-explore and remove the displacement clause in JPEPA.

    10. ^Yes hopefully, as we need higher quality / better built vehicles... some ASEAN built cars feel shoddy at best due to cost cutting, particularly the MPVs.

    11. @Ulysses Ang Maybe revise the JPEPA terms to include hybrids and EVs? No manufacturer has announced plans (or seem to have any future plans) to make those kinds of cars here so that would be massively beneficial to prices of many cars here. IMHO, they should have done this a long time ago to make cars like the RAV4 Hybrid cheaper and priced more palatably at around 2.2 million.

  2. It will surely eat a large chunk of market of its chinese competitor. A usual toyota way - always late on the game but always emerge as victor in terms of units sold.

    1. The new TOTL GAC GS3 Emzoom R-style variant trumps this Toyota on all fronts - space, engine, appearance package, ADAS, Tech & Entertainment, Safety.

    2. GAC?! Please, do not compare that chinese garbage with a Toyota.

    1. yes, kinda. It may be riding on the DNGA platform but this one looks more Toyota than it does Daihatsu.

    2. If DNGA, price should be competitive. But if TNGA, not sure how will they priced it.

  4. Wow... That Looks so Nice! BTW will there be a Hybrid variant for this DNGA-bases Yaris Cross?

  5. The CR-V was already re-designed...hope they'd come up with a better looking RAV4 soon.

  6. Yes, confirmed the shipping of 447 units in last june to the Philippines if we check at gaiikindo export data

  7. Ground clearance is 260mm? Then they probably position this to counter Xpander Cross.

  8. If this tops out at 1.6M as pointed out elsewhere, that’s Corolla Cross 1.8 V territory and wouldn’t make sense. I’d take the mid-range of this and spend the change on fuel OR get the Corolla Cross V with the added confidence of the TNGA platform.

    1. Agreed. The Yaris Cross Hybrid would have been a much more effective Kicks rival if they priced it at around 1.4 million (1.5 maximum). This model is not only supposed to be Toyota's entry-level hybrid, but also their entrant to the low-end B-segment crossover class occupied by the Chinese and the Kicks EL+VE. Pricing the car at 1.6 defeats the purpose of being either of those because TMP didn't lower the barrier of entry to their hybrids at all and TOTL instead competes with the premium-end (which is where the Corolla Cross is supposed to compete). Hybrid is great and all but I am starting to think that TMP shouldn't bother bringing that variant here if they couldn't price it right and focus only on the decently-priced ICE-only variants.

    2. Bring the hybrid makes sense so that Toyota could use it to strengthen their case for electrification in the country.

      Delete
    3. @GR Yes but they have the Corolla Cross V Hybrid in their stable in the same segment as the Yaris Cross. The former is supposed to be in the premium-end B-segment crossover class while the latter is supposed to play in the low-end. If the Yaris Cross Hybrid cannot fulfill the duty that it's supposed to accomplish (i.e lower the price of admission to a Toyota hybrid), then why not just leave the role to the Corolla Cross if it can't do that. At 1.6 million, the Yaris Cross Hybrid and Corolla Cross V Hybrid will just cannibalize each other with the latter being a better car fundamentally while you buy the former if you can't get the Corolla in stock. Ok na sana ang Yaris Cross Hybrid at 1.4-1.5 million pero that didn't happen. Let's see how TMP is gonna handle this...

  9. I guess they're bringing in the Yaris Cross to compete with the Honda BR-V.

    1. @GR BR-V and Yaris Cross are different segments, the Veloz and Rush competes directly with the BR-V.

    2. It will be Yaris cross vs honda wrv

      Delete
    3. It will be Toyota Yaris Cross vs. Nissan Kicks vs. Honda HR-V.

@Freedom, the Honda WR-V competes with the Toyota Raize/Daihatsu Rocky/Perodua Ativa

  10. And just when you thought TMP's lineup wasn't saturated, here comes this. At this point Toyota is fielding competition against its own models.

  11. That design looks really weak and aging. But this would probably still sell well mainly because of the brand name and despite the usual shortchanging of features (to maximize profit$$) and also meh looks/performance.

    1. @Uly, this was what the other automotive website posted though they said exact prices will be around those figures they posted and @GR posted here.

The said automotive website also confirms that there will be a hybrid DNGA Yaris Cross here as well to serve as the top of the line variant.

    2. We have the exact prices/full specs/colors already, but there's a thing called an NDA which we signed. We have to honor that.

    3. @Uly, I know that you guys have to honor that non disclosure agreement. I'm not contesting it. I myself also signed NDAs before.

For me, I'm happy to know that there would be a hybrid variant of the Yaris Cross.
