Mazda to Start Producing 2.0-liter Engines in Thailand

Mazda has opened an engine machining factory at its Thai powertrain plant. Located in Chonburi Province, Thailand, the newly installed machining plant and enhancement to its current assembly process will boost Mazda Powertrain Manufacturing Thailand (MPMT)’s annual capacity from 30,000 to 100,000 units.

Established in 2013, MPMT currently produces several components for the Mazda2 subcompact including two engines (1.3-liter Skyactiv-G and 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D) and the 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission.

In the near future, Mazda has announced that MPMT will also be able to produce the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine and then use them for Thailand-produced units as well as export them to Mazda’s production bases in the region such as Malaysia and Vietnam.

By expanding its production base outside Japan, Mazda hopes to streamline its operations and shorten customer lead times for products such as the CX-5.
