Volkswagen Teases First All-Electric Vehicle: the ID.3

Months before its world premiere at the IAA International Motor Show, Volkswagen has revealed the first model in its new ID all-electric vehicle family: the ID.3.

According to Volkswagen, the “3” in ID.3 is meant to signify the third major chapter of a model of strategic importance after the Beetle and the Golf. And true enough, the ID.3 has garnered more than 10,000 registration even before its official debut sometime in September and customer deliveries by the middle of 2020.

The ID.3 1st, the official moniker for the first 30,000 units of Volkswagen’s all-electric compact car will offer higher equipment levels and more performance. It will be the first model to benefit from VW’s “medium-sized battery option” (available later for other ID.3 buyers) which has a range of 420 kilometers.

The ID.3 1st special edition will have 4 color choices and 3 versions. All versions will have “large wheel rims” and will come with features such as voice control and navigation. Other features on offer include a large panoramic sunroof and an augmented reality heads-up display.

After the ID.3 1st, the ID.3 will offer 3 battery options putting its range between 330 kilometers and 550 kilometers.

Volkswagen says they’re committed to produce the ID.3 in an environmentally-sound way using power from renewable sources.

In order to meet the expected demand for its zero emissions vehicles, VW has converted its factory in Zwickau, Germany to become the largest production site for electric vehicles in Europe. At full capacity, it can produce up to 1,500 units a day for Volkswagen and up to 330,000 vehicles a year.

Unavoidable emissions in the production process will be compensated for by certified climate projects, the company said.
