Volvo Cars, SAIC to Use NVIDIA Chips to Drive Self-Driving Tech


Volvo Cars and SAIC join the growing ranks of automotive and transport companies which will use NVIDIA-based chips to power their next-generation autonomous drive vehicles.

For Volvo Cars, they will use NVIDIA Drive Orin to power increased self-driving technologies which will make its debut on the all-new Volvo XC90 which is planned to be revealed next year.

The XC90, running on a new platform called SPA2, will contain an advanced sensor suite for automated steering, acceleration, and braking functions. It will also be perpetually upgradable via OTA software updates.

Meanwhile, China’s largest automaker, SAIC, which manufactures brands such as MG and Maxus will also use NVIDIA Drive Orin for its two new EV brands that will come packed with advanced self-driving features.

One of the new SAIC brands is known as R Auto and will offer not just automated driving features, but an on-board advanced intelligent assistant called R-Tech. 

The other is the ultra-premium IM brand which is a joint-venture with Alibaba. These long-range EVs, which include a sedan and SUV, will also offer automated driving features will launch within the year.

Other automakers which have designed up to use NVIDIA Drive Orin include Faraday Future and their FF 91 EV (top photo), Vietnam’s VinFast, Nio, Li Auto, and Xpeng.
