2022 Mazda MX-5 With Improved Handling Is Now Available In The Philippines (w/ Specs)

Mazda Philippines launches the 2022 MX-5—the latest iteration of its iconic two-seater roadster which offers improved handling performance and creature comfort features.

“With over close to 1,000 examples sold by our distributorship since 2014, The Mazda MX-5 continues to be a popular and highly regarded sports car in the Philippines,” says Steven Tan, president and CEO of Mazda Philippines. “Mazda’s lightweight, open-top formula as seen on the MX-5 has consistently been realized for more than 30 years. But we believe there is still room to involve the driver even more and enhance the emotional bond with his car. That is why we are continuing to elevate this already unique driving experience with the introduction of new features and owner-initiated options that will make future MX-5 owners even happier and fulfilled.”

Available for reservations starting today, the 2022 MX-5 continues with its 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine delivering 184 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 205 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission with paddle shifters. This allows the MX-5 to retain its outstanding power-to-weight ratio.

New this year is the addition of Kinematic Posture Control or KPC across the line-up. KPC is an ingenious solution that gives the 2022 MX-5 enhanced levels of handling and grip without adding weight.

KPC cuts down body roll and improved high-speed cornering precision by applying up to 45 PSI of braking pressure to the inside rear wheel during cornering. KPC is triggered when the on-board sensors detect a difference in speed between the two rear wheels. This gives the same effect of costlier and heavier adaptive dampers. KPC also helps keep the MX-5’s notably comfortable ride (read more about Kinetic Posture Control here).

The addition of KPC is all part of Mazda’s unique “gram strategy” for the MX-5, which focuses on every detail to minimize any unnecessary weight without any compromise. This includes using aluminum for the power plant frame, front fenders, hood, and trunk lid as well as shaving millimeters off various pieces of metal or foregoing foam in the sun visors. All in all, the goal is to focus the MX-5 with the essentials of a driver’s car while preserving the safety, styling, convenience, and comforts that Mazda owners value.

Thus, for 2022 Mazda Philippines now adds Platinum Quartz Metallic to its list of paint color options (it replaces Artic White). Other colors available are: Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, Polymetal Gray, Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, and Snowflake White.

Meanwhile, models equipped with the red nappa leather—a unique feature in its price category—swaps that for a new brown shade of full-grain nappa leather called Terracota. Black leather and black fabric seats remain on the menu.

A solid suite of safety features is included with dual front and side-impact airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, rear parking sensors with reverse camera, Adaptive LED headlights, Smart City Brake Support, and Lane Departure Warning.

In terms of variants, Mazda Philippines is making adjustments with the addition of a new MX-5 Club Edition in soft top. Like the MX-5 RF Club Edition, this further enhances the roadster’s dynamics with sport-tuned Bilstein dampers, BBS alloy wheels, and Recaro seats.

Pioneered by Mazda Philippines last year, the Build Your MX-5 continues this 2022 with 76 possible combinations available. Options include two fabric soft top colors—Obsidian Black or Dark Cherry, while the RF will have either a body-colored or black roof option for automatic transmission-equipped variants, or a black roof for manual geared RFs.
