2022 Toyota Avanza Scores 5-Star ASEAN NCAP Safety Rating


Toyota has another vehicle that’s managed to score perfect at the ASEAN NCAP safety tests: the all-new 2022 Avanza.

Tested as the top-of-the-line Veloz trim, it’s the first Toyota model that was assessed under the stricter 2021-2025 protocol (the Raize was tested as the Perodua Ativa). The Avanza scored 34.88 out of 40 in Adult Occupancy Protection (AOP), 17.17 out of 20 in Child Occupant Protection (COP), 16.03 out of 20 in Safety Assist Technology (SAT), and 11.92 out of 20 in Motorcyclist Safety (MS) category.

The ASEAN NCAP revealed that the all-new Avanza’s new global platform remained stable in the frontal offset crash test, although the driver’s chest and the front occupant’s lower legs only received marginal and adequate protection, respectively. The same “weakness” is found in the side impact test where the driver’s chest only received marginal protection (perhaps height-adjustable seatbelts, not found in the Avnaza, could help?)

It's worth noting that the model tested by the ASEAN NCAP came with 6 SRS airbags as well as autonomous emergency braking (no pedestrian detection) and blind spot detection on top of the usual ABS with EBD, and electronic stability control. So far, the top-of-the-line Avanza 1.5 G in the Philippines doesn’t offer AEB.

Having said that, the ASEAN NCAP results say that the test results are also valid for the Philippine market which could strongly indicate that the local spec Avanza Veloz (or simply, Veloz if the rumors are true) to come packing Toyota Safety Sense. This will add Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Auto High Beam to its list of safety features.

It’s reported that Toyota Motor Philippines is launching the Veloz in May.

Then if all the rumors were true, that Veloz is now its own model (away from being a variant of Avanza) and it has, hopefully, a much better suspension (like Rush which, it'll probably replace) a slightly-tweaked 1.5 NA engine and TSS (not a replacement for good driving, but you'll be glad it's there) then, we have a strong Xpander Cross and XL7 competitor.

    With this update, Suzuki XL7 is starting to look underspecced now.
