2024 MG3 Will Be Philippines' First Number Coding Exempt Sub-Compact

Available for test drives this weekend at the Auto Focus Summer Test Drive Festival, it’s been confirmed that MG’s new sub-compact hatchback, the MG3, has been certified as a Hybrid Electric Vehicle or HEV by the Department of Energy.

Based on the latest DOE HEV Recognized List, the 2024 MG3 (ZP22 model code) will come with a 102 horsepower 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine which is then paired to a 136 horsepower electric motor (194 horsepower, 250 Nm combined). Similar to Honda’s e:HEV setup, the MG3 has a separate motor generator as well.

MG’s first non-plug-in hybrid, the MG3 Hybrid sprints to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds from rest. Even more impressive—its 80 to 120 km/h overtaking speed takes just 5 seconds. And with a 350-volt, 1.83-kWh lithium-ion battery, the MG3 Hybrid+ can be driven purely on electric power. Yet, it manages to return up to 22.7 km/L when the internal combustion engine fires up.

Additionally, because it’s classified as a strong or full-hybrid, the MG3 will benefit from the EVIDA Law’s benefits such as number coding exemption.

Looks-wise, the MG3 takes on the new corporate design language also seen in the MG GT (MG 5) and MG 4. Designed at MG’s Shanghai studio, it’s larger for its class with its 4,113 mm length, 1,797 mm width, and a wheelbase that stretches to 2,570 mm.

No official specs have been revealed, but expect the MG3 to have high level of in-car tech including a 7-inch digital instrument screen and a 10.25-inch central infotainment system. Other equipment highlights include a 360-degree camera and smartphone integration.

The 2024 MG3 will be launched by the end of May.

Speed kills. With so much speed and power and in the hands of a noob/newbie or intoxicated, this spells danger. But I digress from the comment here :) If MG prices this well, its market will take over the trad nameplates.

  4. Hope that all non-plug in hybrids are designed/built in a way that it can be installed with a Plug-in module which can be purchased from the manufacturer.

@Uly, are those vehicles 4100mm long more or less still considered sub-compacts like Vios. These are the sizes common in India (<4m). is there no official term in the industry for these size? Bec if we say subcom then its covers a wide range of car sizes today.
