Lexus Philippines may have only confirmed the arrival of the all-new ES and heavily refreshed IS this year, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t be springing a surprise. That surprise may be coming in the form of the updated RZ BEV luxury SUV.
Appearing at the Department of Energy’s list of recognized EVs, Lexus is looking to expand the RZ range from the current two variants (RZ 300e and RZ 450e) to three (RZ 350e, RZ 500e, and the RZ 600e F Sport).
Across all models, Lexus has upgraded the lithium-ion battery pack to a 77 kWh one boosting the range anywhere between 450 kilometers to 575 kilometers (WLTP). Moreover, a new battery pre-conditioning function is standard improving its DC charging times.
Confirmed in its documentation, the RZ 350e will come with a single front-mounted electric motor that drives the front wheels (224 horsepower). This goes up to a dual motor, all-wheel drive setup in both the RZ 500e (381 horsepower) and the RZ 600e F Sport (408 horsepower).
All variants benefit from better quietness thanks to added sound deadening and the use of a new high-damping adhesive in the floor. Even the tonneau cover hasn’t escape scrutiny which now comes with an additional soundproofing felt layer.
When the wild, bi-winged RZ 600e F Sport arrives locally, it should come with two new technologies. The first is the steer-by-wire system. The steering wheel, now almost rectangular in shape, has a 200-degree full left or right lock. The steering gear ratio adjusts in real time according to vehicle speed. Since there’s no physical link between the steering wheel and the axles, the driver receives appropriate feedback communicated by electric signals, minimizing unpleasant vibrations.
Moreover, the F Sport will also get the Interactive Manual Drive that allows drivers to control the power output of the RZ 600e F Sport with the paddle shifters, as if using an 8-speed manual gearbox. Operation is accompanied by real-time feedback through the throttle as well as replicated engine sounds and even a rev limiter.
