Mazda PH Recalling All First-Generation Mazda3 For Logos That May Shatter

Bermaz Auto Philippines (BAP), the official distributor of Mazda vehicles in the Philippines is recalling all first-generation Mazda3 models for shattering steering wheel logos.

The “BK” model first launched in 2003 and assembled in the Philippines at Ford’s Sta. Rosa, Laguna plant is part of a larger global recall surrounding steering wheel logos that may shatter during airbag deployment.

In the event of a crash that causes the driver frontal air bag to deploy, the plastic Mazda logo on the steering wheel air bag module cover may shatter and project fragments into the vehicle interior.

Due to an improper material specification, the plastic logo may become brittle over time. In this condition, the logo may shatter during a normal air bag deployment. Plastic fragments of the shattered logo may hit occupants during an air bag deployment in a crash, increasing the possibility of serious injury to occupants. There is no prior warning for this defect.

While the Mazda3 of that time wasn’t distributed by BAP, they are taking corrective action by replacing the airbag module cover. They will shoulder the cost of the parts and labor associated with the airbag module cover replacement. The replacement of the affected part will take less than one hour.

Customers who own the first-generation Mazda3—launched in 2003 and sold until 2007 may reach out to Bermaz Auto Philippines through customer.service [at] mazda.ph or call any authorized Mazda dealer.
