Vehicle Importers See Sales Rise 55 Percent In First Half 2021

The Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors or AVID tallied 30,153 units sold for the first half of 2021, or a 55 percent increase from 19,509 units sold in the same period last year. Light Commercial Vehicles or LCVs rallied 64 percent, rising to 21,684 units sold compared to 2020’s 13,244. Meanwhile, Passenger Cars (PCs) also managed a 26 percent increase—7,707 units this year to last year’s 6,128 units.

In June alone, AVID sales rose 33 percent with 4,936 units sold this year compared to last year’s 3,698 units. Again, LCVs grew the most—rising 44 percent from 2,462 units to 3,556 units in 2021. Meanwhile, PCs also rose 13 percent from 1,200 to 1,350 units.

Month-on-month, AVID members saw sales remain stable from 4,871 units sold in May 2021 to 4,936 units sold in June 2021 or a 1 percent increase. LCVs saw a 4 percent dip in June (3,556 units) versus May’s (3,719 units). PCs, meanwhile, rallied, rising 19 percent from 1,131 units sold in May to 1,350 units sold in June 2021.

“It has been an uphill struggle for the automotive industry, more so among importers, but the recent numbers are encouraging. As our nation progresses towards achieving herd immunity, the automotive industry has proven resilient and poised to emerge stronger than ever. With better prospects ahead, we will continue to give our best to ensure the complete recovery of the industry. This much, we owe the Filipino people,” said AVID President Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo.

LCVs, which comprise 72 percent of of AVID sales is lead by Ford with 9,096 units sold followed by Suzuki with 6,038 and Hyundai with 2,837 units. Meanwhile, in PC sales, Suzuki once again kept the top spot with 3,949 units sold to Hyundai’s 2,567 units sold. In the Commercial Vehicle (CV) segment, Hyundai tallied 759 units sold. Hyundai is the best-selling bus brand in the Philippines, and number four in the truck segment locally.
