Subaru Aims To Lap Nürburgring Nordschleife In This 1,088-Horsepower All-Electric Prototype

Subaru’s motorsports division, Subaru Technica International or STI is targeting to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in about 400 seconds (6 minutes 40 seconds) without a single drop of fuel. And they’re doing it in this—the STI E-RA Challenge Project.

A near-future motorsport study project that’s thankfully, not a crossover, it is bound for the infamous German circuit from 2023 onward after repeat driving experiments including at circuits in Japan this year. It is set to beat the Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR’s lap time of 6 minutes 40.33 seconds. It will also be the second fastest EV around the circuit coming only second to Volkswagen ID.R’s 6 minutes 5.336 seconds time.

In order for the STI E-RA Challenge Project to achieve such a level of performance, it will utilize Subaru’s strength in all-wheel control technology. The four-motor prototype will offer four-wheel torque vectoring and a total of 1,088 horsepower.

For the motors, a high-torque, high-revolution type with an integrated inverter and gear for hyper EVs developed and supplied by Yamaha is being used. This motor is driven by a lithium-ion battery with a storage capacity of 60 kWh.

The unique torque vectoring system will balance the grip limit of each of the four wheels separately, optimizing them using signals from sensors in each wheel that measure things like wheel speed, vehicle speed, steering angle, G-Force, yaw rate, brake pressure, and wheel load.

The STI E-RA Challenge’s motors are directly attached to the four wheels, increasing the possibility of it competing in the FIA E-GT if Subaru and STI decide to take that direction.
