Hyundai's Design Language Moves to "Art Of Steel"

Hyundai is moving away from its current design language, Sensuous Sportiness, for Art of Steel. It will make its global debut with the Concept Three—the Ioniq sub-brand’s first-ever compact battery electric vehicle.

First introduced in the Initium FCEV Concept (which turned into the second-generation Nexo), Art of Steel embodies a philosophy that celebrates structural beauty and functional strength. It’s inspired by the idea that steel, typically valued for its utility, can also be a medium of elegance and sophistication.

With Art of Steel, Hyundai wants to deliver designs which are powerful yet refined, modern yet timeless. The Art of Steel emphasizes sharp contours, smooth transitions, and premium materials that elevate the driving experience and provide a luxurious, high-quality feel.

Some of the standout elements of Art of Steel include Sculpted Strength and Defined Contours which focuses on dynamic sculpting that combines sharp, defined edges with seamless transitions; Aerodynamic Precision and Fluid Design which take into account the reduction of drag and the enhancement of aerodynamics; Advanced Lighting and Connectivity which use exterior and interior lighting to add a futuristic aesthetic; Refined and Luxurious Interior which commits to the use of high-quality materials with intuitive controls; and finally, Premium and Sustainable Materials which uses eco-friendly, yet high-quality fittings that don’t sacrifice luxury or durability.

Thanks to the Art of Steel design language, the Concept Three will feature sculpted surfaces, clean intersections, and distinctive character lines that emphasize motion and precision. The “Aero Hatch” as Hyundai calls it reimagines the typology of a compact EV.

“Designing the Concept Three was an opportunity for us to rethink the compact EV from the ground up,” said Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center. “We defined the ‘Aero Hatch’ typology to craft a silhouette that captures a sense of flow and becomes a beautifully proportioned sculpture.”

Manuel Schoettle, exterior designer of Concept Three added, “The authenticity of the way we treated the steel fits perfectly. It just felt natural, making the Concept Three extremely pure, and hopefully it will bring a smile to your face.”

The Hyundai Ioniq Concept Three makes its global debut on September 9.
