Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), one of the leading EV battery makers in the world, has unveiled the Shenxing Pro, the world’s first lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that doesn’t smoke or explode after a thermal runaway.
Thermal runaway is a safety concern among battery electric vehicles. Due to overcharging, or more typically, a manufacturing defect, it causes the battery temperature to rise. The increased heat typically leads to a chain reaction wherein it can potentially lead to fire, explosions, and the ejection of gases and particles.
Positioned to power Europe’s rapidly expanding battery electric vehicle market, CATL realizes this and has engineered the Shenxing Pro. It features advancements in battery chemistry, structure, system, and control.
Equipped with CATL’s NP 3.0 (No Propagation 3.0 technology), it enables sustained high-voltage supply and power for an hour post thermal runaway. This allows drivers to navigate their vehicles away from danger zones in emergencies. The battery maker also assures that no flames or smoke will emerge from the battery pack.
In terms of packaging, Shenxing Pro incorporates Wave cells, which feature a raised shoulder design and space-sharing technology. This allows the cooling systems and mounting to be applied from any direction. Moreover, it boosts the overall battery pack stiffness by 25 percent and doubling its durability. Shenxing Pro breaks traditional Cell-to-Body (CTB) limitations through this cell design, achieving a 76 percent pack volume efficiency.
CATL is offering its new battery in two formats.
The Shenxing Pro Super Long Life & Long Range Battery is the world’s first LFP battery to offer a 758-kilometer WLTP range, and a 12-year or 1,000,000-kilometer lifespan. Battery degradation is limited to just 9 percent after the first 200,000 kilometers.
The second format is the Shenxing Pro Super-Fast Charging Battery. It provides 478 kilometers of range with just 10 minutes of charging. Moreover, it delivers 830 kW of power (roughly 1,128 horsepower) even at 20 percent state of charge. This version is backed up by a 10-year or 240,000-kilometer warranty.
CATL is the world’s largest battery maker and by far the largest EV battery maker in China, with 151.71 GWh installed EV battery capacity in 2025 (January – July), having 43.5 percent market share in China, ahead of second BYD, which has 23.6 percent share. It currently operates two plants in Europe, with a third on the way. The first was opened in 2018 in Erfurt, Germany. The second was opened in 2022 in Debrecen, Hungary. The third plant was announced in 2024. It currently counts BMW, Stellantis, and Volkswagen as its customers.
