The current-generation Toyota Hilux is about to get its third refresh (along with the launch of the new GR Sport, it was just refreshed late last year) and this time it brings mild electrification to the pickup truck segment.
First shown in Europe last year, the Hilux Hybrid’s 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel now drives a compact 16 horsepower, 65 Nm motor generator, which in turn charges the new 48-volt lithium battery that’s small enough to be installed under the rear seats.
Despite being electrified, the 2.8-liter engine retains its outputs: 204 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm of torque between 1,600 to 2,800 rpm. However, the 48-volt system does result in more responsive acceleration, improved braking performance, and greater fuel efficiency (up 6 to 10 percent, per Toyota).
For example, the additional power of the hybrid 48-volt system delivers better throttle response and linear acceleration, particularly from a standstill, while regenerative braking creates a more effective and natural deceleration feel.
Models equipped with the new 48-volt system also gain the standard Multi-Terrain Select which offers six selectable drive modes that enhance performance in challenging conditions.
Special attention has been paid to ensuring the Hilux Hybrid possesses formidable water-crossing capabilities. It can drive through water up to 700 mm deep thanks to waterproofing of the 48-volt battery and DC-DC converter while new anti-slip and strengthening measures on the motor generator pulley and belt ensure optimum performance, even when wet.
Together with the new hybrid powertrain, the Hilux also gets a revised face for 2025.
Now looking more like the North American Tacoma, the 2025 Hilux gets a new-look grille and front bumper combined in an interlocking design with an octagonal grille, trapezoidal lower section, and a bold outer bumper, which houses the fog lamps. Other changes include a dark-tinted LED headlamp cluster, and gloss black accents to the fog lamp bezels, exterior mirrors, and door handles.
Inside, the 2025 Hilux gains dual-zone climate control, a wireless charging pad next to the gear shifter, and two rear USB Type C ports next to the AC vents.
Australia is the first market to receive the 2025 Hilux and Hilux Hybrid where it will be made available starting in March. However, with Australia also sourcing its Hilux units from Thailand, it’s inevitable that ASEAN models will also see an update (with or without the hybrid powertrain). Expect a regional debut to be made by the time the Bangkok Motor Show rolls in March.
MTS sa Hilux, finally. Prado tech is trickling down to the more affordable 4x4s. Also, I wonder what transmission is used. In Thailand, the media was able to drive a prototype mild hybrid 1GD but with an 8-speed auto, and with a gear selector straight shift pattern instead of the outdated gated system in the current Hilux. It also had a digital gauge. Compared to the current Hilux (non-Conquest) the new face looks much better now that they got rid of the lipstick around the grille. I still prefer the Conquest face, but for the E variant this is a nice upgrade.

ReplyDeleteThis is the new bumpers for the low variants in Australia, equivalent to our J and E variants. Hybrid models in the Philippines are usually top-of-the-line, I doubt they will put this bumper on our hybrids
