The BYD Sealion 6 DM-i better watch out, Geely is entering the segment with its very own plug-in hybrid crossover called the EX5 EM-i. And the wait won’t be long as the first batch has arrived at Philippine ports ahead of a first quarter launch.
Based on filings made with the Department of Energy, the EX5 EM-i will come in two variants—the Pro and the Max. This is corroborated by the fact that the units shown at the local port have two different alloy wheel designs.
Mechanically, however, they are the same. Both the EX5 EM-i Pro and Max variants are powered by a front-mounted 217 horsepower (160 kW), 262 Nm electric motor. A 100 horsepower (73 kW), 125 Nm combustion engine acts as a generator, feeding electricity to an 18.4-kWh LFP battery. The EX5 EM-i can also be charged using both AC (6.6 kW maximum) and DC (30 kW maximum).
Geely says that compared to battery electric vehicles, PHEVs like the EX5 EM-I are often favored in dense urban environments such as Metro Manila, where traffic, flooding, detours, and varied daily routes make charging-dependent mobility less predictable.
Geely has previously emphasized a diversified electrification strategy across its global line-up, combining battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion powertrains to meet different market needs. According to the company, this multi-path approach allows it to introduce products that align more closely with real-world usage rather than relying on a single electrification solution.
The Philippine introduction of the EX5 EM-I forms part of Geely’s broader product roadmap following its transition to direct local operations. The company has indicated that additional new models across various segments and powertrain types are in the pipeline as it continues to strengthen its presence in the country.

It would be a good idea for anyone interested in the EX5 EM-i (Geely StarRay in other countries) to watch the reviews on Youtube as this vehicle does not really have that much going for it except that it's all new (either good if there are no teething issues, or bad if if it has not been thoroughly debugged).
ReplyDeleteNote that where all new vehicles are concerned, only Toyota and Honda (including their premium brands Lexus & Acura) are generally successful on their 1st year of a new model launch.
The X5 EMi may outsell the SL6 if priced below, or at the SL6's price, but Geely Philippines is unlikely to price it competitively since they don't properly evaluate their pricing strategy (like most other car manufacturers/dealers) as seen in their pricing of their vehicles.
Note that the TOTL X5 EMi is being sold In China by Chinese Exporters at for about USD20,000 then add 50% Philippine Excise Tax which makes it USD30,000 X P58.83 (todays USD to Php rate) = P1.7649M. Lets assume that Geely China provides a 10% (optimistic) rebate to Geely Philippines which brings down the calculated price to P1.588M just to penetrate the local market.
My guess is SRP at P1.64M with maybe a P60K - P70K introductory cash discount so around P1.57M. P1.64M SRP is a low guesstimate.
At P1.57M or even at P1.5M, the Tiggo REV LE has the same or more features than the X5 EMi, and has 2 additional child seats which if folded down provides about 690L of cargo space while the X5 EMi only has 475L of cargo space.. No doubt though that more prospective buyers will find the EX 5 Emi exterior and interior more attractive than that of the REV LE.
Unless Geely brings in a much better equipped X5 EMi Max( better than the TOTL reviewed on Youtube), there's little doubt that REV LE will remain to be the better value fore money purchase as against the X5 EMi.
As far as the SL6 is concerned, it's a 2023 design with zero updates.
Lastly, the SL6 & X5 EMi don't have published or advertised water wading depths, while Chery Philippines website indicates a 500mm wading depth for the REV LE. For me that's peace of mind that's unquantifiable in Pesos.
