MG Philippines has confirmed that it’s launching the S5 EV SUV this August. The all-electric sub-compact SUV is set to join the Chinese carmaker’s growing electrified line-up which already includes a wide array of HEV, PHEV, and BEV choices.
Built on a bespoke EV architecture which it shares with the non-Urban MG4, the MG S5 EV features a Porsche 911-like rear-motor, rear-wheel drive layout. The solitary variant offers 170 horsepower (125 kW) and 250 Nm of torque thanks to a single permanent magnet synchronous motor. A 49-kWh LFP battery gives it 415 kilometers of NEDC range. Charging is done via the CCS Type 2 standard with 7 kW of maximum AC charging and 120 kW maximum DC charging.
MG says that the ultra-thin battery design and low center of gravity keeps the MG S5 EV feeling planted during more spirited drives. This is further complemented by its all-around independent suspension.
The MG S5 EV sports an aero-optimized design that brings down its co-efficient of drag to 0.28. It features checkered flag-inspired DRLs, black 17-inch alloy wheels with aero panels, 215/60R17 tires, active grille shutters, and a functional front air dam. At the back, it also has a full-length LED bar and the same checkered flag LED taillights.
Inside, the new-generation MG cockpit design means having a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. It will also sport automatic climate control and a rotary shift knob.
The MG S5 EV will also arrive with a full suite of MG Pilot ADAS functionality on top of 7 SRS airbags and a rear-view camera with dynamic guidelines.

ReplyDeleteThe S5 is nearly the same size as the upcoming GWM Ora 5, which offers 580 km (NEDC or 480-500km WLTP) driving range. It also falls short in performance, producing only 170 hp versus the Ora 5's 220 hp. If MG PH will price price this similarly to BYD's Atto 3 and above the Ora 5, I don't see how this will get the buy in of the market.
