Review: 2014 Chevrolet Sonic LTZ Hatchback

Photos by Ulysses Ang
About two years ago, I was given the opportunity to drive the Sonic (sedan, hatchback), Chevrolet’s replacement to the solid but otherwise unremarkable Aveo. And while I had a great time loving the delectably designed exterior, premium feeling interior, and the respectably solid driving manners. The experience was without its hiccups, but in the end, you know the General is heading in the right direction with their revitalized sub-compact.

2014 Honda Jazz vs the Competition

So, Honda has finally released their all-new, Jazz. But where does it sit next to its competition? Well, we’ve stacked it up against its most likely competition in the sub-compact, gasoline-powered hatchback segment: Chevrolet Sonic 1.4 LTZ, Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost, Kia Rio 1.4 EX, Mazda2 1.5, and Toyota Yaris 1.5 G. We actually wanted to pit it against the Suzuki Swift 1.4 as well, but data for its interior dimensions are rather hard to find.

Who says it’s not exciting to go backwards? Television star and former professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek recently proved that the Chevrolet Sonic can jump backward and break a Guinness World Record in the process. We’ve driven the Chevrolet Sonic LTZ sedan (full story here), and although we commended it for its stylish exterior, well-built interior, and solid driving dynamics it wasn’t a fool-proof choice given its lack of fuel efficiency, tech, and value. With a change of body style from the staid 4-door to a sportier 5-door, will the Chevrolet Sonic score better? Let’s find out.

Something Big and Something Wonderful: Chevrolet Sonic and Trailblazer Ride and Drive

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Chevrolet’s exclusive importer and distributor, The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI) started their 2013 with a bang after a fun-filled ride and drive activity that featured their two newest “babies”: the Sonic sub-compact and the Traiblazer mid-sized SUV. Although launched in the latter half of 2012, this is the first time most of the motoring media has sampled Chevrolet’s latest offerings. Overall, the consensus was these two cars are impressive, proving that Chevrolet is off to a great start this year.

Review: 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LTZ Sedan

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Whether Chevrolet likes it or not, the Sonic story actually starts with the Aveo, a cheap and crummy sub-compact from parent General Motors’ Korean subsidiary, Daewoo. It certainly was cheap for its time, but it wasn’t cheerful in any sense of the word. It was one unsatisfying car to drive with a dismal design and abysmal driving dynamics. It was so bad that Chevrolet’s micro car, the Spark, was a much better drive.

That was 2004.

Chevrolet Brings Sonic to PHL - Top Gear Philippines

According to the folks at Top Gear Philippines, The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI), the exclusive distributor of Chevrolet vehicles in the country has quietly rolled the all-new Sonic (i.e. new Aveo) into showrooms.

Initially available as a 4-door sedan, the all-new Sonic is powered by Chevrolet's new generation 1.4-liter engine with 99 horsepower. Inside, the Sonic gains the motorcycle inspired instrument cluster first seen in the Spark. The Spark is available in both six-speed manual and six-speed automatic versions (not dual clutch, not CVT).

The all-new Chevrolet Sonic 4-door is priced at P 778,888 for the manual and P 828,888 for the automatic model. The 5-door hatchback will be launched next month.
