MG Philippines Moves Launch of 7-Seater RX8 to 2021

It looks like there will be a bit more wait for MG’s first-ever 7-seater SUV, the RX8. With a preview at the Manila International Auto Show scuttled, it seems The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI) has decided to push the launch of its RX8 to sometime in 2021.

The RX8 will join MG Philippines’s line-up to include an all-new sedan, MPV, and another SUV. MG will also preview the all-electric ZS EV or eZS, if you prefer its name in other markets.

Going back to the RX8, the mid-sized SUV features a body-on-frame construction meaning it will compete with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest. However, since it measures 4,923 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and sporting a wheelbase of 2,850 mm, it’s the largest among the pickup-based passenger vehicle (PPV) market.

The most likely engine would be a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine mated to a 6-speed automatic with cruise control and paddle shifters. With that, it makes 221 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 360 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. However, MG may throw a surprise and opt to offer a 2.0-liter diesel found in the related MG Gloster found in other markets. If that’s the case, it’ll get 161 horsepower in the single-turbo and 214 horsepower in the twin-turbo version.

As for pricing, MG hasn’t revealed what the pricing would be, but don’t be surprised if it’ll be near (or will even breach) the P 2-million mark given it won’t fall under the favorable tariffs with China which favors vehicles with a displacement of 1.5 liters and below.
