The All-New 2022 Subaru BRZ Sticks to a Proven Formula


The all-new 2022 Subaru BRZ can be summarized in one sentence: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Subaru’s 2+2 sportscar pretty much sticks to the same formula as the first-generation model: low curb weight, low center of gravity, but with just an added sprinkling of new tech.

Retaining the platform of the first-generation model, Subaru has integrated elements from its Subaru Global Platform to increase rigidity particularly with its chassis mounting, sub-frame architecture, and other connection points. All in all, the Subaru BRZ is said to have 50 percent increased torsional stiffness. Moreover, to keep the curb weight down, it uses aluminum for the hood, fenders, and roof.



Sadly, there still won’t be any turbo power for 2022. Opting for a normally-aspirated 2.4-liter flat-4 instead, the 2022 Subaru BRZ makes 228 horsepower—a modest 28 horsepower increase and 250 Nm of torque—up 50 Nm. Still, with just 1,276 kilograms to push around, the engine is more than enough. A 6-speed manual is standard, but there will also be a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. A limited slip rear differential is standard for all variants.

Design-wise, the Subaru BRZ is visually cleaner, but similar to the outgoing model. It does gain the option of running 18-inch wheels (17 inches is still the standard).

Inside is where the breadth of change happens. Thanks to the enhanced platform (and the use ultra-high-strength steel), visibility has been improved overall. It gets a new 7-inch digital dashboard with the tachometer front and center. Switching over to track mode and the tachometer shifts to a linear graph with a color display. For infotainment, it gets an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bucket seats are standard for the front, while the vestigial rear seats still fold down enabling the fitment of large items such as golf bags.





For safety, the 2022 Subaru BRZ gains a rear parking camera as well as EyeSight Driver Assist technology, at least for variants equipped with the 6-speed automatic. It also has an enhanced stability control system with five driving modes. It can also be turned off completely if the driver wants complete control.

The all-new 2022 Subaru BRZ will be assembled in Gunma, Japan and will continue to be done in collaboration with Toyota (expect the Toyota 86 to get roughly the same upgrades). Sales will start in the U.S. by early fall 2021 (around September). With that in mind, expect the Philippine launch to happen at around the same time.
