Falken Develops Smart Tires With Power Generated By Rotation

Falken may be on the verge of introducing “smart” tires that require no external power source. The project done between Falken’s parent company Sumitomo Rubber Industries and Professor Hiroshi Tani of Kansai University has resulted in a sensor powered simply by the tire’s rotation.

The “Miniature Energy Harvester” as the system is called uses the tire’s rotation to generate electricity and supply power to sensors installed in the tire. The sensors then calculate the contact patch, wheel rotation, and even stress levels. The data obtained can then be used to determine tire wear.

According to Falken, the most immediate impact of this technology would be to help them develop tires with an optimized contact patch and longer life. In the long-term, it may result in smart tires which can warn drivers of punctures, uneven wear, misalignment, and more.
