Meet The First Smart Engineered By Geely: The Smart #1

smart has unveiled the first product engineered by Geely under a collaboration first announced in 2020. The smart #1 is the cornerstone of the brand’s revival as it seeks to become an all-electric brand. Spurred by their “dual-home” business strategy, the smart #1 is a collaboration by teams working between Europe and China.

Underpinned by Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture or SEA, the smart #1 is meant to convey a forward-thinking design. Its space-to-footprint ratio is pushed to the maximum with a 2,750 mm wheelbase stretched over a compact 4,270 mm overall length. It also contains elements such as concealed door handles, frameless doors, and a floating roof motif with a glass roof.

The shift towards Geely’s common SEA platform has enabled the smart #1 to push out 272 horsepower and 343 Nm of torque. Moreover, top speed is rated at 180 km/h. The all-electric crossover packs a 66-kWh battery enough for a cruising range up to 440 kilometers. Peak charging is set at 200 kW enough to charge it from 10 to 80 percent in 3 hours using a 22-kW AC charger or 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes using a DC charger.

Realizing that new car buyers regard technology as important, smart has created a simple, yet cutting-edge cabin with a floating center console. Passengers can enter using a digital key, and once inside they experience a 12.8-inch touchscreen display (the driver has his own 9.2-inch display), customizable ambient lighting, a 13-speaker Beats audio system, among other features. The rear seats also slide in a 60/40 split to maximize the available cargo room. Moreover, they have also promised a wide range of driver assist features.

A centralized, high-performance computing architecture built into the smart #1 ensures dynamic over the air updates so that more than 75 percent of all ECUs in the car can be continuously iterated and updated remotely (OTA).

The smart #1 goes on sale in Europe by the end of the year. It will be built by Geely in China.
