2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Brings Fight to Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Suburban

Jeep breaks ground in the full-sized SUV segment with the introduction of the all-new 2021 Grand Cherokee L. It is the first-ever three-row version of the Grand Cherokee, and is built from the ground up to give it a refined sense of style and craftsmanship without any detriment to its class-leading off-road capability.

The 2021 Grand Cherokee L uses a unibody design using 60 percent advanced high-strength steel. It also uses lightweight, high-strength aluminum closures for areas including the hood and tailgate. Moreover weight-saving measures have been done by mounting the axle directly to the engine as well as employing a magnesium cross-car beam, aluminum shock towers, and an electronic master brake booster system.

Coupled with its weight-saving measures, the Grand Cherokee L offers two powerful, yet fuel-efficient engines. The standard engine is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 290 horsepower, while those who want more power can opt for the 5.7-liter V8 rated at 357 horsepower. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic.

For off-roading, the Grand Cherokee L comes with independent suspension all around, and will come with a choice between three 4x4 powertrains and a terrain-based traction management system. A class-exclusive Quadra-Lift air suspension with electronic active damping adds up to 106 mm of ground clearance to the standard 212 mm. It can even reduce it by 46 mm for easy ingress/egress. When equipped with the air suspension, it features a 30.1-degree approach angle, a 23.6-degree departure angle, and 22.6-degree breakover angle.

In terms of design, the Grand Cherokee L is inspired by the original Wagoneer—Jeep’s first full-sized luxury SUV. It has slim LED headlights, taillights, and available 21-inch wheels for the very first time. Assembly is helped by laser light to minimize gaps.

Inside, the ultra-long 3,091-mm wheelbase gives unsurpassed room across all three rows. The front-row seats can be had with 16-ways of adjustment including length-adjustable cushions for the first time. Features include open-pore oak or walnut on certain variants as well as a 10.25-inch frameless digital gauge cluster, a 10.1-inch Uconnect infotainment system, and a digital rear view mirror. Audiophiles will love the 17-channel, 19-speaker McIntosh system.

It also comes equipped with more than 110 security and safety features including hands-free active driving assist which gives the 2021 Grand Cherokee L Level 2 autonomous driving capability.

The all-new Grand Cherokee L will be built in Jeep’s Detroit Assembly Complex – Mack Plant during the first quarter of 2021. A two-row version is expected to be launched at a later time as well.
