Mark your calendars! Be one of the first to test drive the all-new Volkswagen Tharu on Saturday, September 30 to Sunday, October 1 at the Karrera Showroom in Filinvest City, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
Just a couple of weeks after the first batch arrived in the Philippines, Volkswagen has revealed the most important bit of info: the price. The Volkswagen Tharu will be available in two variants—the 300 TSI DSG SE priced at around P 1.8 and top-of-the-line 300 TSI DSG SEL at P 1.95 million.
Both variants feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with BlueMotion tech. This outputs 160 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. It hooks up to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic driving the front wheels.
The Tharu DSG SE features LED headlights, silver-colored roof rails, a body-colored spoiler, and a power tailgate as standard, while opting for the Tharu DSG SEL adds matrix LED headlights with adaptive front lighting (AFS), cornering and fog lamps, a hands-free power tailgate, panoramic sunroof, ambient interior lighting, and intelligent park assist. It also swaps the silver roof rails and body-colored tailgate spoiler to gloss black.
The complete specs will be revealed after its launch on September 29.

China made, 1.5L engine, yet the managed to price this close to 2 million when the similarly sized Territory starts at a lower price and doesn't touch 1.8 million! Looks like the Trax has competition on who will get closest to 0 sales. I expect nothing less from Ayala, bravo!

To be fair to them, the variants they are selling here cost 1.365m and 1.5m in China so can't really price them at P1.4-P1.5m, but I agree that the price is too high. Would make more sense at 1.6m-1.75m maybe.

ReplyDeleteWho said it sucked? I don't think anyone here said the unit itself sucked. I'm only lamenting the brand's current state of malaise locally. If ACM is satisfied with VW's lackadaisical performance, that they won't even implement aggressive sales strategies to gain market share, then it is truly lamentable.

DeleteIll be that one guy and go against everyone but it actually seems to be priced decently. Looking at the specs on the Chinese website and videos online, it seems to be positioned more of a luxury vehicle than mass market based on the interior design and material choices. Also fully loaded with features, assuming the local one also gets VW's full ADAS.
ReplyDeleteThe Ford Territory has a better looking interior, IMO, and you can have both of its variants at much better prices. Heck, you have to add a whopping 200K to the TOTL Territory's price just to get the Tharu at its BASE varaint. Positioning VW as a luxury brand is not only foolish, it goes against what Ayala promised the VW AG when they bagged the brand's local distribution rights. It also goes against the spirit of Volkswagen, which literally means "People's Car."
DeleteAccording to another site, the base variant is 1.85M, so you need to add an even more eye watering amount of 250k (A QUARTER OF A MILLION!) just to get the entry level.
DeleteBetter looking, fine, that's subjective. But the quality? The Territory feels like a Chinese car and not like a Ford. Plus all the random glitches that their engineers didn't bother to fix. I've driven a friend's and any time the headlights are on, the screen makes an annoying buzzing sound when it dims. The fuel gauge would refuse to move even if the vehicle is off while refueling. The cameras don't always appear in reverse. Mind you, this was the next-gen Territory. It's the things like these that show how the Territory was able to be priced like it is.
DeleteMind if I cut in? I think I can give you some answers since I own a Ford Territory Titanium X. Regarding the infotainment's buzzing sound, increasing the screen brightness solves that issue, you only get the sound when your screen brightness is set too low. How and why it happens, please don't ask because I don't know. Regarding the fuel gauge getting stuck, that's definitely abnormal. I've never encountered that issue, and I've never turned off my car while refueling. Might be a sign of a faulty fuel pump, take it to the dealer and have it checked. For your reference, my mileage is way past 6k, almost 7k in fact. Regarding the cameras not showing on reverse, mine has never failed on me, though on some rare occasions there's about a one second delay before it appears, it happens to my Mazda CX-5 too, and it used to happen to my old Honda CR-V as well. My point is, it happens to all electronic systems. That's how electronics work, you're bound to encounter some software gremlins every now and then. If you think the infotainment of the Ford is bad, you should've seen my old Volvo XC90. When I got hiccups on its infotainment system, I had to restart the entire car, sometimes more than once, just to get it to work. With the Ford, Mazda, and Honda, I've never had to do that.
DeleteI did notice that with the infotainment, but why would I want to blind myself at night? I personally always dim the screen, sometimes even turn it off in cars that can. For the fuel gauge, it was weird because I was refueling when it suddenly stopped at around 500 pesos when I had less than half a tank left. Other owners also report similar experiences. With the infotainment, I've had a previous-gen S60 and my infotainment never glitched out on me except maybe once or twice in 8 years

DeleteI've never had issues with the infotainment screen's brightness, I'm certainly not blinded by it either, in fact I only discovered the sound while tinkering with the settings. The sound didn't bother me that much when I encountered it though, perhaps it helps that the phenomenon doesn't occur at my preferred brightness. If you want to turn off the screen, you can place it on standby by long pressing the volume knob. My old XC90 was a 2016 model, with the iPad-esque Sensus infotainment system, and I kept it for about three years. The issue was exacerbated by the climate controls being integrated into the infotainment. While the Territory has the same setup, at least it has dedicated, basic ac controls separate from the screen. You can't control the aircon on the XC90 when the infotainment glitched, requiring a vehicle restart everytime it happened. It wasn't often, but it occurred more than once during my short ownership.

Another website speculates the engine might be 2.0T given the high SRP but based on VW SAIC's website, 300 TSI is for 1.5T engine, while 2.0T engine has 330 TSI badge

Base tharu is pricy and bare, Tiggo 8 pro more luxurious inside, more powerful engne, 7 seater, affordable price, has ADAS, longer warranty and lots dealerships. Or changan cs 55 plus for just 1.3M
