Mitsubishi may have already launched the all-new Triton, but it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit more for the all-new Pajero Sport/Montero Sport. For 2024, the Japanese carmaker is giving its mid-sized SUV one more refresh.
Just launched in Thailand, the new Pajero Sport gets a new grille for 2024. The trademark Dynamic Shield design now sports a sawtooth pattern similar to the current Xpander Cross as well as new headlights. The bumpers, front and rear are also new, while at each corner, the 18-inch alloy wheels now have a turbine-like design.
Inside, the 2024 Pajero Sport / Montero Sport continues with its all-digital gauge cluster, but updated with sharper, better graphics. The steering wheel’s also new. Other changes include the headliner, which is now black instead of light gray and available two-tone leather seats with a diamond cut pattern in a black and burgundy colorway.
Market depending, it seems Mitsubishi is giving its SUV two powertrains.
For some markets such as Thailand, it’ll sport the 2.4-liter 4N16 engine which was introduced in the all-new Triton. However, because it doesn’t have a two-stage turbocharger, the outputs are capped at 184 horsepower and 430 Nm. These variants also swap out the 8-speed automatic for a 6-speed automatic.
In other markets (the Philippines might be included), the 2.4-liter 4N15 is still being offered due to its more relaxed emissions requirement (the 4N16 requires Euro 5 diesel fuel). This one makes similar outputs to the 4N16—181 horsepower and 430 Nm. Though it gives up three horsepower, its big advantage though is having an 8-speed automatic as opposed to a 6-speed.
On 4WD models, the updated Pajero Sport continues to offer the Super Select 4WD-II system with a rear locking differential and hill descent control.
It’s very likely that the refreshed Montero Sport will arrive in the Philippines by the first half of 2024. It will likely launch at the same time, or right after the Xforce which is slated for a June release.
Is it confirmed that PH will retain the old engine/tranny combo? If so, it is actually a good thing because the 8 speed auto is much better than the 6 speed. Even if the 4N16 is more efficient by itself than the 4N15, the 8 speed auto will make up for it.

DeleteWhat is also interesting is that the 4N15 is Euro 5 compliant already since the 5th gen Strada/Triton and 3rd gen Montero. Euro emissions couldn't have been the sole reason for the switch of engine configuration in the Thai market.
ReplyDeleteMMPC will continue to use the same old engine and transmission to the 2024 Montero Sport to save costs as the newer engine one downgraded into 6 speed automatic transmission
ReplyDeleteRetaining the older engine is also meant for the GLX 4X2 M/T variant as its the best selling Montero Sport variant in the Philippine market.
I agree that Mitsubishi in the Philippines could retain the old engine and tranny because the current Montero Sport is not designed to have the new cable-link 6 speed manual, there would be significant engineering changes to the platform to adapt the cable-link manual over the mechanical-link manual.

ReplyDeleteI believe this is the last hura of Montero Sport Badge. Pajero Sport as most countries using it will be the new name to be used by the Diamond brand especially in Asia.

Current generation Montero Sport can't be fitted with PHEV technology.
