Review: 2019 Isuzu mu-X RZ4E LS A/T

The Asian Utility Vehicle or AUV has a special place in the Filipino family’s heart. For decades, it’s been the quintessential “practical car.” Alas, the country’s shift to Euro 4 emissions last year meant the end of the road for these 7-, 8-, or even 10-seaters. Without a direct replacement, AUV buyers had to settle for something smaller like a small MPV, while car companies heavily reliant on them, like Isuzu, saw overall sales nosedive almost 45 percent. In the intersection of buyers’ clamor and Isuzu’s need to prop up their numbers, the inevitable happened. The result is the 2019 Isuzu mu-X LS A/T—the mid-sized SUV that’s priced like an AUV.

The 2019 Isuzu mu-X LS A/T is this Generation's Family Vehicle

When choosing your next family vehicle, there is a lot to consider; and for that, it can be a daunting task. With how much family life throws at a vehicle these days, many are looking at a mid-sized Sport Utility Vehicle or SUV for their comfort, capability, and flexibility. Sadly, this generation’s family vehicle can also break the bank. Luckily, there’s the new 2019 Isuzu mu-X LS A/T—a fully-featured 7-seater SUV that’s priced like a crossover or sedan.

From the outside, the Isuzu mu-X LS A/T inspires confidence, capability, and success with its bi-LED projector headlights with integrated daytime running lights and LED taillights. The radiator grille, front fog light garnish, and tailgate garnish are all finished in a technical-looking Material Gray while the side mirrors, and door handles are in sporty Material Black. Rugged-looking 16-inch wheels shod with 245/70R16 tires fill in each corner as well.

Inside, the mu-X LS A/T is one family-friendly SUV with comfortable seating for 7 adults. In addition, the interior remains highly flexible with its fold-flat second- and third-rows enabling it to carry large items like boxes, sports gear, and even bicycles and furniture. More than space, it is featured to be family-friendly too with its 8-inch infotainment system with 6 speakers, Bluetooth hands-free, and GPS navigation. Even the fabric seats—finished in a Jersey & Tricot material are well-wearing and easy-to-clean.

SUVs are considered to be the safest category of passenger vehicle and yet, the mu-X LS A/T ups the notch by keeping the entire family secure with its world-class safety system. Standard safety features include Dual SRS Airbags, Anti-lock Brakes System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Brake Override System and Brake Assist.

With a price tag of P 1,300,000, the mu-X LS A/T brings back the mental image of Isuzu’s legendary and dependable Crosswind. For all intents and purposes, it may be the Crosswind’s spiritual successor but this one is powered by Isuzu’s latest engine: the RZ4E engine.

The Isuzu RZ4E engine brings Isuzu into the global trend of offering a smaller displacement engine with impressive outputs. In the mu-X LS A/T, it produces a maximum of 150 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 350 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 2,600 rpm. It is up to 48.36 percent more fuel efficient and is designed for low maintenance with its Hydraulic Valve Lash Adjusters (HVLA), a single engine accessory drive belt with Auto adjuster, a cartridge-type oil filter, and a steel timing chain with automatic chain adjuster. It is also mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift for excellent performance both city or out-of-town setting.

The Isuzu mu-X LS A/T’s unbeatable mix of style, roominess, features, safety, and performance means it can easily meet all the family’s needs. Whether it is the daily trip to school or the weekend getaway with the whole family, the mu-X LS A/T is this generation’s family vehicle.

Review: 2018 Isuzu mu-X 1.9 RZ4E 4x2 LS-A

The downsizing trend has finally hit Isuzu. Known for their relaxed, high-displacement diesel engines, Isuzu has been a hold out in this global trend. Alas, the reign of its 2.5-liter 4JK-1 is finally over and in its place comes the 1.9-liter RZ4E. Naturally, opting for such a small engine—one that displaces a mere 1,898 cc—presents certain challenges, the biggest of which concerns power-hungry Filipinos. Will it have enough grunt to satisfy your need for speed; let alone carry the mu-X’s rather hefty frame? A two-week drive beckons to answer those questions.

What's the Best Fuel Economy Figure We Could Do with Isuzu's RZ4E Engine?

Isuzu launched a modern, downsized turbodiesel engine last March in the form of the 1.9-liter RZ4E Blue Power. Fitted under the entry-level mu-X and now, D-Max, the Japanese diesel specialist touts it as a technical tour-de-force with two goals in mind: offer response expected for an SUV (or pick-up) in its class while returning even better fuel economy than the outgoing 2.5-liter motor.

2018 Isuzu mu-X 3.0 Blue Power vs 2018 Toyota Fortuner 2.4 TRD

It is given: mid-sized 7-seater SUVs is now this generation’s family car. Aside from a seating configuration that allows the entire caboodle to hit the shopping mall in style, they’re tall (flood-proof), durable, and most importantly, powered by a frugal (ish) diesel engine. Naturally, not one SUV could have everything. This suddenly puts into focus the buyer’s priorities: does he want something practical, but dull or is he will to sacrifice a bit of that practicality for a dash of sportiness?
