2027 BMW i3 Debuts With Up To 469 Horsepower, 900-Kilometer Range

BMW expands the Neue Klasse family with the all-new i3. Not to be mistaken for the diminutive city hatchback the brand sold way back in 2013, the “NA0” BMW i3 is now essentially the 3 Series reinvented for the electric era.

The German brand calls its i3 a “quantum leap” and its platform is a great way to start. Its EV-specific underpinnings with an 800-volt electrical architecture means faster charging and performance. DC charging rates of up to 400 kW results in 400 kilometers of range added in just 10 minutes, while with its large battery pack (no confirmation on the exact size) means going up to 900 kilometers between charges. It also offers bi-directional charging and vehicle-to-load capability.

At launch, the i3 is offered in just one variant: the i3 50xDrive. Powered by a rear electrically-excited synchronous motor and a front asynchronous motor, it makes 469 horsepower (345 kW) and 645 Nm of torque.

Like the first Neue Klasse model, the i3 has the “Heart of Joy” where the steering, brakes, and motors are all controlled by one of four centralized computers. The powerful regenerative braking system handles almost all braking duties enabling features such as “soft stop” where the electric motors are used to bring the car to a stop without any jerkiness or brake noise.

Adaptive dampers are available as an option, but as standard, it comes with MacPherson Struts at the front and a five-link axle at the rear with stroke selective passive dampers.

Like the iX3, the i3 deliberately takes on a different design approach to the usual EV. Although no traditional engine is needed, BMW has opted to enlarge the i3 over the current G20 3 Series. At 4,760 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,480 mm tall, it’s 47 mm longer, 38 mm wider and 40 mm taller than before. The wheelbase is 46 mm longer at 2,897 mm.

Design-wise, Neue Klasse elements such as the shark nose front end, LED headlights integrated in the twin gloss black panels, and clean surfacing used throughout the car are present. Interestingly, the i3 is the first 3 Series to use flush pop-out door handles with an electronic release—something which may be changed soon as safety regulatory bodies have begun banning it. At the back are slim L-shped taillights and aero wheels measuring up to 21 inches in diameter.

Inside, the i3 operates on the new BMW Operating System X and has the new Panoramic iDrive interface. Like the iX3, the instrument cluster is replaced by a full-width projection display along with 17.9-inch infotainment screen. Among the new features found here are Qi2 wireless charger, a panoramic glass roof with a heat-insulating layer, and a variety of seat upholstery including both Veganza synthetic leather and Merino genuine leather.

Finally, the i3 comes with Level 2 ADAS. Curiously, BMW’s system allows the driver to add steering, throttle, and even light braking inputs giving birth to what they call “Symbiotic Drive.”

The BMW i3 will be manufactured at the BMW Group plant in Munich. Production starts in August 2026 with global deliveries to commence soon after that.

  3. Hate that black plastic piece to make up for the shape of the car. It’s not part of the silhouette. It should have been glass. Due to cost cutting strategies, they put a black plastic piece on the C-pillar instead.
