Hyundai PH Promotes EV Mobility With SM Supermalls Partnership

Hyundai Motor Philippines continues its drive towards promoting sustainable mobility with the inauguration of its first batch of Hyundai-branded EV charging stations. This is done in partnership with SM Supermalls.

The first Hyundai-branded EV charging station is located at the North Car Park of the SM Mall of Asia. Subsequently, the program will also roll out to The Podium in Mandaluyong, SM City Fairview, SM City Clark, SM City Cebu, and SM Lanang Premier in Davao.

Present at the inauguration were Mr. Dongwook Lee, HMPH President; Mr. Hans Sy Jr., SM Engineering Design & Development Corp. President; Mr. Cecil Capacete, Hyundai Motor Philippines (HMPH) Managing Director; Mr. Steven Tan, Shopping Center Management Corporation President; and Mr. Bien Mateo, SM Senior Vice President for Operations.

Though carrying Hyundai’s corporate branding and identity, these EV charging stations are open to all brands of EVs for as long as they use a CCS Type 2 charger. Though the Philippines has yet to mandate a standard EV charging standard, the CCS Type 2 charger is considered the most widely-adopted EV charging plug.

Chinese EVs which typically use the GB/T standard, will require a separate adapter. Older-generation EVs that use CHAdeMO are not compatible.

Know more about the various EV charging standards here.

The SM Supermall EV charging stations are typically AC wall box-type chargers that between 7-kW and 11-kW, depending on the location. A 75-kW DC fast charger is also available at SM City Baguio.

The use of the EV charging stations is currently free to all SM mallgoers who own EVs.

  1. Can other brands use the charger/parking or is it exclusively for Hyundai?

    1. These use wallbox chargers (the ones that you would put on your house) so they charge from 8 hours up 12 depending on car. Honestly, SM Malls should use fast chargers given no one will stay there for that long (unless you work there) but it's better than nothing I guess.

    2. These are 7kw chargers so charging time depends with the capacity of the battery.

  3. Fast chargers such as DC type are not practical to use, it will shorten the life of the battery.

    1. It brings more stress to the batteries, more heat means less durable in the long run.

    2. It's meant for destination charging...like when you bring an EV out for a long drive. However, for everyday charging, AC charging (wall box) is the best. And yes, it'll definitely preserve the battery.
