The 2024 Hyundai Exter Makes Sense For The Philippines


After its global debut last May, Hyundai has finally launched its smallest SUV: the Exter. Made for developing markets, it debuts first in India where it’s positioned as the brand’s most affordable SUV.

Over there, the Exter starts at just 599,900 Rupees (P 397,241) and tops out at 999,990 Rupees (P 662,172).

The first-ever Exter uses styling that’s commonplace in other Hyundai models such as the compound headlights. Meanwhile, the H-shaped LED graphics in the DRLs are new, and is expected to become a trademark feature of the brand’s future SUV offerings. The bumpers also integrate a unique EXTER emblem, skid plate-like design elements and a floating roof effect courtesy of a special pattern on the C-pillar. It also debuts a new color—Ranger Khaki.



The Exter is ultra-compact. It competes in India’s sub-4-meter tax bracket and for that, measures in at just 3,815 mm long. It’s 1,710 mm wide and 1,631 mm wide. Its wheelbase, however, is a relatively generous 2,450 mm.

Powering the Exter is a 1.2-liter Kappa normally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine. It makes 83 horsepower and 114 Nm of torque driving the front wheels. This powerplant can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automated manual gearbox.

A compressed natural gas (CNG) version is also available.



In terms of platform, the Exter rides on the Hyundai K1 platform shared with the Hyundai Casper. Suspension-wise, the Exter doesn’t stray far from other offerings in the segment with its front MacPherson Struts and rear torsion beams. It has front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Wheel sizes, meanwhile, range from 14 inches (165/70R14) to 15 inches (175/65R15).

Equipment wise, the Exter comes with a surprising long list of options. The top-spec variant has leather/fabric combination seats, digital instrument cluster, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charger, sunroof, automatic climate control with rear vents, and push-button engine start.

As for safety, it comes standard with 6 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control with hill start assist, and rear parking sensors. Higher-trim variants get a rear camera and tire pressure sensors.

Perhaps if only the Hyundai/Kia group were to partner with Ford, like how the latter did similarly with Mazda until 2015, then perhaps Hyundai could end up licencing Ford technology via Ford's partnership with China's JMC. Thus instead of being developed in India, now that Ford no longer exists there, Hyundai may instead reengineer all of their emerging markets-only models in the same research and technical development centre that Ford owns just as where the Ranger and Everest models are developed. (Which is located in Australia since its deeply sensible for Ford to market the Ranger and Everest models in RHD Thailand and Malaysia more because both Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore are already right-hand-driven markets but however Hyundai/Kia in Thailand would have no match for Toyota and Mazda there as Hyundai/Kia had no pickup competing with Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Ranger, Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton/Strada.)

Maybe unless if only Hyundai (Motor Group) were to partner with both JMC (China) and Ford (U.S. of America/United Kingdom/Australia), especially given that the Ford-JMC joint venture (JV) resulted to the presence of the Ford Territory in the Philippine market (but not in right-hand-drive/RHD markets like Thailand and Malaysia), then it could also make sense for Hyundai/Kia to licence JMC's technologies for use in Hyundai/Kia cars and have Hyundai/Kia behave just like JMC — similar to how the Ford Territory did. (Although that Hyundai said on the article is developed in India perhaps since Ford has more sales in Thailand then Ford may just assemble Hyundai/Kia cars in their Thai (Ford) factory now that the mechanically-related Fiesta and Ecosport models are already discontinued...)
