Review: 2017 Mazda CX-5 AWD Sport

On the surface, it seems Mazda has lost their engineering mojo. After coming up with all sorts of buzzwords to fill up the first-generation CX-5 in 2012 (KODO and Skyactiv to name two), this second-generation model doesn’t seem all new. Yes, there’s the sexier styling and more premium cabin, but the dimensions and engine look all too familiar. Is Mazda now riding on the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” bandwagon?

MIAS 2017: CX-5, CX-9, and MX-5 RF are Mazda's All-New Power Trio (w/ Specs)

UPDATE: The specs and more photos are below (4/2).

Mazda easily had one of the most attractive booths at the Manila International Auto Show this year. Keeping with the brand’s global show branding of midnight black multi-level flooring, each car stood out on its own, tall and proud, effortlessly calling out to passers-by. And trust us – you will stop and find yourself weaving through the display like you just want to take them all home.

All-New Mazda CX-5 Production Goes into Overdrive as Manila Launch Nears

Mazda is proving just how flexible its manufacturing processes can be. In order to respond quickly and flexibly to the growing demand for its second-generation CX-5, the company just announced that they’ll be producing it at the Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi prefecture. This is in addition to the Hiroshima Plant where it’s currently being produced.

Second-Generation Mazda CX-5 Off to Great Start

It looks like the all-new CX-5 is poised to be a big hit for Mazda. In its home country of Japan, reservations have spiked to 9,055 units since order books opened last December. And with customer deliveries starting only five days ago, the Hiroshima-based carmaker is expected to move around 2,400 of them monthly.

Review: 2017 Mazda CX-5 AWD 2.2 Skyactiv-D

The diesel engine has been embroiled in a lot of controversy lately. With several carmakers caught cheating on emissions, could the love affair with this frugal oil burner be over? Is the future finally all about fancy gasoline hybrids or complicated electric vehicles? Though stringent emissions have yet to be implemented in the Philippines (the country is still at Euro 4 while others are moving towards Euro 6), one carmaker has spearheaded the move for a truly clean diesel; one that doesn’t require a cheat device to meet the most demanding emissions standard in the world: Mazda.

Long Distance Love Affair: The Mazda Skyactiv ASEAN Caravan

Photos by Ulysses Ang
There’s no greater test of love for a car than a long-distance drive. While it’s easy to get infatuated with a car right at the showroom floor, that feeling normally fades away the moment you put in the miles. You imagine the seating position could be better; the sight lines clearer; the power more linear. So imagine what Mazda put at stake when they subjected the entire Skyactiv-G line-up (except the MX-5 and Mazda6) on a grueling 4,000-kilometer journey through Indochina.

Mazda Philippines Makes Maps Available for Local Units

There’s more good news from Mazda Philippines. After confirming the arrival of the CX-3 subcompact crossover sooner rather than later, Berjaya Auto Philippines, the exclusive distributor of Mazda vehicles in the country, is also rectifying the single and glaring missing thing on its vehicles equipped with the Mazda Connection infotainment system: GPS navigation. Yes, Mazda owners, you can now activate turn-by-turn navigation.

2016 Mazda CX-5 AWD and Mazda6 Skyactiv-D: The Full Specs

You’ve read our first impressions on the new Skyactiv-D equipped Mazda6 and CX-5 AWD. If not, you can check it out here. Meanwhile, if you’re interested in all the specs, well, you came to the right place. Just remember two things: first, the price for both models is P 1,985,000; second, stocks, particularly for the CX-5 AWD Skyactiv-D are limited (due to allocation). So if you’re in the market for a top-end compact crossover, decide now. Anyway, the specs continue after the break.

First Drive: 2016 Mazda6 2.2 Skyactiv-D and 2016 Mazda CX-5 2.2 Skyactiv-D AWD

What a difference a letter makes. Though it doesn’t look it, the two Mazda vehicles you see here: the Mazda6 and CX-5 AWD are very different from the models introduced last year. No amount of squinting will help you see the changes, because the only discernable difference is found on a trunk badge that reads, “Skyactiv Technology D”. Yes, Philippines, the Skyactiv-D is now here and it’s going to transform how you’ll drive.

Review: 2015-2016 Mazda CX-5 AWD Sport

The first of the full Skyactiv line of vehicles, the Mazda CX-5, first introduced in 2012, is still at the top of its game. It delivers a driver-centric experience without sacrificing practicality and efficiency. It’s a rare breed of car that’s both a personal and popular choice; something the husband and the wife won’t disagree over. Simply put, Mazda didn’t need to revamp it. It’s good as it is and still sells briskly. Except, the Mazda3 happened and since then, the company has had to sprinkle the same sort of updates particularly because the CX-5 commands a price premium over its non-crossover stable mate.

Mazda CX-5 Goes Battling Entry-Level Crossovers with New Maxx Variant

After showing it off as part of the Mazda Collection at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) last April, Mazda Philippines is finally revealing all the details of the 2015-2016 (their terminology, not ours) CX-5 and Mazda6. Of course, regular readers will notice that these are already in the June 2015 Philippine Car Price Guide and we have reviewed the 2015-2016 Mazda6 sedan. So let’s focus on the most interesting aspect: the new CX-5 Maxx.

Just three years and five months since production started in November 2011, the Mazda CX-5 has reached a production milestone. Just a few days ago, the 1,000,000th (yes, one millionth) CX-5 crossover has rolled off the assembly line. This makes it the second fastest Mazda model to reach the milestone—the first being the Mazda3.

MIAS 2015: The 2015 Mazda Collection Impresses

Mazda Philippines’s sprawling and intimidating 1,000 square-meter space at the Manila International Auto Show is a strong show of force and for very good reason. Just last year, Mazda achieved a milestone with overall sales almost doubling that of 2013. The end tally shows them selling more than 3,200 units overtaking Subaru in the process. Of course, the giant showcase isn’t just for celebration. They’ve used the occasion to strategically launch 13 all-new or significantly updated new models for 2015. In short, if you’re buying a car that’s not a Mazda, you better hold off that purchase.

MIAS 2015: Mazda's Display is a Strong Show of Force

Mazda Philippines is pulling out all the stops to bring back the fun in driving and they’re using the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) as their venue. The Japanese brand, best known for ‘zoom-zoom’, ‘KODO’, and of course, ‘Skyactiv’ will have the biggest footprint among exhibitors at the World Trade Center, measuring at 1,000 square-meters. And it won’t just be the case of making things roomy for show goers. Mazda says they will bring in 13 all-new or improved models at the show. Yes, you read that right. Thirteen all-new or improved models for 2015.

2015 Ford Escape vs the Competition

It seems Ford Philippines is re-defining what ‘premium’ in ‘premium compact crossover’ really means with the all-new 2015 Escape. Available in two variants, the 1.6 SE and 2.0 Titanium, it’s bound to draw comparisons with the best compact crossovers available in the market as of now namely, the Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan X-Trail.

During the same event, the company also unveiled its new range-topping variant for the Mazda3: the Mazda3 Speed.

Review: 2014 Mazda CX-5 Pro

The bane of sport utility vehicles, compact crossovers included, is their infamy for being gas-guzzlers. Equipped with four-wheel drive this and electronic doodad that, they do deliver outstanding driving performance at the expense of burning a sizable hole in your wallet due to terrible fuel mileage. It’s for this reason why some buyers skip this genre altogether and instead move up to a mid-sized SUV powered by a lean-burning diesel. However, Mazda wants you to re-consider the compact crossover once more; one that doesn’t sacrifice driving performance for the sake of great fuel economy. They want you to take a look at the new Mazda CX-5 Pro.
