How Safe is Your Car? The Full List of ASEAN NCAP Test Results

There’s always a burning question: which is the safer vehicle? Given that safety is now fast becoming an important consideration for Filipino families, it’s good to get the results straight from the experts. In this case, it’s the ASEAN NCAP.

The ASEAN NCAP or New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asia is the newest addition to the NCAP family and is targeted to elevate vehicle safety standards particularly in the ASEAN area. It’s a response to the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety which started in 2011 and runs until 2020.

Sample of a 0-star rated car.
The ASEAN NCAP is a collaborative effort between the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Global NCAP. In their assessments, there are two rating schemes based on Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) which is given by a star-rating and a Child Occupant Protection (COP) which is given in a percentage-based rating.

Take note: for a vehicle to be awarded a full 5-star rating, it must be equipped with Electronic Stability Control or ESC. Otherwise, the rating is dropped to just a maximum of 4 stars. Also, ASEAN NCAP notes that larger vehicles and smaller vehicles cannot be compared apples-to-apples. The test simulates crashing a vehicle against something similar to its own mass (+/- 150 kilograms).

Currently, the ASEAN NCAP hasn’t tested all models available in the market, so the results below represent those already tested by the organization. Since the list is long, it’s been reduced to models/variants which are similar (not all models are the same) to what is sold in the Philippine market.

Models marked with an asterisk (*) are tested using the new 2017-2020 protocols which combine the scores for Adult Occupancy Protection (AOP), Child Occupancy Protection (COP), and Safety Assist Technologies (SAT).

Sadly, the Philippine-spec Colorado doesn't have Electronic Stability Control (ESC), at least when I last drove it. So technically, our PHL market Colorado also drops to 4 stars.

  2. Totally Agree, Safety + Power = Winner !!!

  3. How about Isuzu's top selling model, the Crosswind? I wonder what its rating is considering a lot of people buy them. It must be safe since its their number one selling model right? People are not stupid enough to buy unsafe cars right??? Right???

  4. Crosswind, Adventure, Innova and Starex are AUV means "gawang talyer" so that they are not eligible to NCAP testing. So please be advised to drive safely when using these third world vehicles. Please correct me if im wrong.

    1. That is incorrect. Both the Innova and the Starex have NCAP ratings, for example (both are 4 star vehicles).

The Starex is a global commercial vehicle. AUVs like the Innova, Adventure and Crosswind are built on manufacturing production lines too, just like global vehicles. It is less expensive for manufacturers to do this on such high volume models.

    2. Agree with Ivan. If you scroll through the list, the all-new Innova has already been tested.

    3. So what's the crosswind's rating? The crosswind is safe right? A lot of people can't be that stupid right? I mean its Isuzu's top selling model! Filipinos are not stupid right????

    4. Ok, I'll bite. The Crosswind and Adventure are being sold because consumers keep buying them. At this point, the Adventure is 17 years old and the Crosswind is 15 years old. They should have been replaced a long while ago. But they're just reliable and cheap to run that's why people keep buying them.

We still keep using the jeepney, when we should be using buses in their place.

    5. No one's answering my question. Is the crosswind safe or not? Would Filipinos seriously put their family inside this death trap all because it's "cheap and reliable"?

    9. Ah ganoon ba? Eh bakit madami bumibili ng crosswind? Top selling model pa nga daw ng Isuzu, di pala qualified sa NCAP? Ibig sabihin ba nito, the driving force behind Isuzu's sales are a bunch of morons?

  5. Kudos to Honda for having mostly 5 stars (except ones without ESC).
