Volkswagen PH Teases 2021 Santana Sub-Compact Sedan

Volkswagen Philippines is hoping to re-energize its line-up this 2021 with the preview of their first model of the year: the 2021 Santana. Showed via a set of teasers (see below), the German automaker says their sub-compact sedan will come with “more features for customers to enjoy.”

What those features are, Volkswagen has yet to reveal but it’s clear that the 2021 Santana will basically be a refresh of the current model—evidenced by the carryover doors, pillars, and greenhouse. Based on the teasers, it will get side mirror-mounted turn signal repeaters and a moon roof. Those features are already standard on the AT-equipped Santana, but who knows, they may become standard on the MT variant as well.

Speaking of the powertrain, in China, where VW Philippines sources the Santana, the 1.4-liter MPI has been discontinued, while the 1.5 MPI has been upgraded. Whether the Philippines will benefit from the upgraded engine is still a question mark, but the EA211 engine features exhaust valve timing and a variable pressure oil pump. All in all, this should improve mileage by as much 10 percent. Power-wise though, it remains more or less the same as the current model—112 horsepower (up 2) and 145 Nm (minus 5) of torque. This is mated to either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.

Regardless of features, Volkswagen Philippines promises that the 2021 Santana will retain its positioning with its “affordable” price.

Volkswagen Philippines is expected to reveal more information about the 2021 Santana in the next few days.
