Review: 2016 Toyota Fortuner 2.8 V

Normally, when a carmaker launches an all-new product, it opens not just a chapter in that vehicle’s history, but an entirely new volume. That said, Toyota didn’t get the memo with the all-new Fortuner. Granted it looks sleeker and much more sophisticated than ever before, it adheres too closely to the concept of kaizen or continuous improvement. It ends up telling pretty much the same story, remixed and retold.

If the original Fortuner were a movie, it’ll be Star Wars: A New Hope. It’s undoubtedly a Toyota magnum opus—a showcase of ingenious design and clever marketing. It brought a “gotta-have-it” element in the otherwise unsexy family SUV business and despite its flaws, people bought a ton of them. No matter what the competition did, the Fortuner gravy train couldn’t be stopped. Ten years on and a new generation later, it’s A New Hope all over again. Only this time, the Fortuner comes with better special effects.

It doesn’t take a car designer to appreciate what Toyota has done with the Fortuner’s design. While the first-generation model looked sturdy, the new one is sleek. It’s all fluid and swoopy with a strong crossover-vibe. The front is dominated by a large upper grille and Bi-LED headlights with DRLs. Along the side, a strong character line runs across the doors while the blacked out C-pillar produces that distinct “floating roof” effect. The rear is no less striking with the tapered tail lights with bold LED elements.

Climbing aboard requires a step up, but ingress/egress is easier thanks to the A-pillar grab handles for the front passengers. Once in there, it has a notch-above look and feel with the two-tone black and brown color scheme. Further elevating the tactile experience is the supple leather not just on the steering wheel, but on the seats, door trims, and center console as well. The plastics are also nicely textured and softened up too. Tastefully done piano black accents and matte wood trimmings complete the transformation. Upfront, the interior space is more or less comparable to the previous Fortuner making it roomier than another sci-fi inspired rival, but the aggressively angled A-pillar does shave off some headroom.

Greatly improved for 2016 is the ergonomics. It’s been cleaned up with logical placement of controls and switches for greater ease of use and operation. With the exception of the chintzy glowing vertical stripes in the gauges, it’s a straightforward affair. The instrument cluster presents all pertinent information clearly and concisely, while the steering wheel and seats offer a commendable driving position. The gated shifter also falls much more naturally within arm’s reach as well.

Moving to the second and third row though, the experience feels largely unchanged. Yes, it’s still quite roomy, but there’s surprisingly not a lot of head room available (especially the middle occupant in the second row and the entire third row). Apart from that, it doesn’t learn any new tricks. The second row still folds, slides, and tumbles in a 60/40 split, but a one-touch tumble mechanism allows easier access to the third row. The third row meanwhile still flips to the side, but a spring loaded mechanism and rear-mounted latch point, attached to the rearmost seatbelts, make it easier to store.

The similar seating configuration serves as a prelude to the Fortuner’s driving experience which is, in a word, familiar. With a carryover platform, piloting it just for a few hundred meters brings a strong sense of connection to the first-generation model. Everything from the sight lines, the position of the mirrors, to the way you peek slightly up the dashboard to look ahead is déjà vu. The steering, a hydraulic assisted unit is heavy, heavier than other similar steering set-ups; but suits the relaxed nature of this vehicle. Compared to before, it filters unwanted ruts and vibrations from the road although some sharp ones do still tend to shudder the steering wheel.

Apart from the steering, its on-road performance is pretty much where the previous model left off. The suspension is tuned to be quite stiff, controlling unwanted pitching through corners thereby adding a feel of stability during turns. The same setup is also largely responsible for improved high-speed stability. On the flipside, push it a tad more and it’ll understeer. Take a bend too fast, and it’ll refuse to turn. Scrubbing some speed is the only solution to get it to cooperate. The same setup is largely responsible for the jiggly ride, especially at low speeds. Improved damping removes some unwanted harshness, but it still hops up and down at even the smallest of bumps. At higher speeds though, it sorts itself out. It becomes quieter and much more compliant as the pace goes up. The brakes offer much better pedal modulation than before, but there are instances where it feels “under braked”.

As the range-topping Fortuner, the 2.8 V comes with Toyota’s next-generation diesel engine: the 1GD-FTV. The 2.8-liter 4-cylinder doesn’t pack class-leading numbers, but the 174 horsepower, 450 Nm output do well enough to push this 2,135-kilogram SUV nicely. Low-speed response is pretty quick, but there’s noticeable jerkiness. The throttle seems to penalize a heavy right foot because of its non-linear engagement. And together with a gearbox that’s eager to shift up, it results in less than refined manners. Maintaining a light pressure on the gas seems the best way to coax it to accelerate smoothly. Switching the selectable driving modes to ECO does help as well, but it also neuters the power delivery, making the 2.8-liter engine feel more like the previous non-VGS 2.5-D-4D.

After getting used to the peculiar throttle, the Fortuner does have a noticeably quieter mill, especially compared to the one it’s intended to replace. It only gets vocal as the revs climb up. Compared to other engines though, including Toyota’s very own 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV, it does sound throatier. As mentioned, the 6-speed automatic could use better refinement at low speeds, but in mid to high speed applications, it’s much better equipped than the old 4-speed ‘box. It’s also equipped with paddle shifters, only they don’t work in the conventional sense. Engaging the paddles at any time displays a gear, for example, 5. This means the gearbox is free to engage any gear from 1 to 5. If you flick it down to 3, it’s free to engage any gear from 1 to 3. It’s not a real manual override, but more of an overdrive off switch. In terms of fuel mileage, it does 7.93 km/L in the city (average speed 15 km/h), not a high number, but a large 80-liter fuel tank means fewer stops between fill-ups.

With such intense competition in the mid-sized SUV wars, Toyota decided to sing a familiar, but popular tune with the all-new Fortuner. Like how George Lucas sees Star Wars as his obra, Toyota sees the Fortuner the same way; and like Lucas, who released the same movie, tweaked and polished twenty years later, Toyota is doing the same with the second-generation Fortuner. It’s the same SUV wrapped in a sexier, bolder wrapper. Whether you believe in the proven formula or not may be the single biggest reason why you’ll be swayed or dismayed with Toyota’s efforts.

  1. Dear Sir,

Our new toyota fortuner has a factory defect. The dealer will replace the whole transmission assembly. Its a 4x2 automatic. Some have already been complaining of the strong jerking issue of the transmission. Thank you.

    1. I dont understand the MT 4x2 fortuner that you need to push the pedal of the clutch at full strength until it reached your matting before you can start the engine. Why?

    2. Ours also, TMP replace a whole new transmission. They told us that it had technical and mechanical problem from gear box to transmission.

  2. Great review. Frank with the negatives and concise. Keep this up Uly, I will keep visiting this site.

    1. Lol this is not tgph, their reviews are like an advertorial, and as uly said, he has a fortuner in his home so he is quite familiar with this suv. Toyota missed it bigtime here, even the mid spec montero or everest has more tech than this overpriced pos. For a 2 mil car and still has rear drums, toyota ph is really being greedy. Sadly a lot of filipinos are still buying this crap,

      Delete
    2. ^^^ Let them WASTE there money on this crap! Pay MORE get LESS on the Fortuner! This should be how they advertise this vehicle.

  3. This must be the most negative review of the new Fortuner I've read so far. There's not a even a mention of the Toyota name badge as a reason for buying this vehicle unlike TopGear's 5-way comparo.

I didn't know that the ride was still harsh since I kept reading that it has been improved over the previous from both press releases and other car reviews.

    1. Having a first-generation Fortuner in the house for comparison every single day helps in determining that the ride and handling are pretty much where they left off. There are subtle improvements for sure, but it's not as comfy or soft riding as its newer competitors.

Finally, badge as a reason for buying it? It may be a reason to be attracted to it, but a car must be evaluated for its objective pros and cons. Having a 50-strong dealership network does help though.

    2. If a car's selling point is mainly the badge, it is overrated! Its about time consumers realize this... the author just nailed some facts here...

    3. hi uly, in tsikot thread niky (topgear) said they compared the 5 suvs subjectively because if they will do it objectively, the trailblazer will trample the other 4. by the way i have a 2015 trailblazer LT.

      Delete
    4. What's his basis? Power? Power is just part of the package. There's no denying that the Trailblazer is the quickest in a straight line, but as of now, that's it. I'm not really that impressed with the rest of the Trailblazer package.

Why? It's not aging pretty well considering the new competition. I want to see how the new Trailblazer will do. I heard the changes are substantial. It's coming out end of this year.

      Delete
    5. The Mux is even selling better than the Trailblazer, knowing that the Mux's engine is less powerful than the Trailblazer's.

  4. Im never a fanatic to accessories and interiors. Torque and Power is what it takes to climb the hills and leave the rest biting the highway dust. This separates the men from the boys. Chevy Duramax 200hp X 500nm simply kicks ass !

    1. I think you should.

Safety and comfort are very important in a family-oriented SUV. As an old tire ad said, "power is nothing without control". I think that saying holds true especially if you're carrying the most precious cargo in the world--your family.

If you wanted power, get a drag racer.

  5. This is the most negative review of the Fortuner yet. But anyway, good job! South African and Australian comparo/reviews, picks Fortuner as the best all-around family SUV. Although it does not exceed in any field, it does every job very well. Comparo includes Montero, Everest, Mu-x. There reviews based on the ride and comfort is quite excellent. It's smooth and quiet in the cabin although not the best in class, but is not a deal breaker.

    1. I think one reason why it's doing better in Australia is that it's speced differently. It has a different rear suspension (5-Link vs 4-Link) and the brakes are four-wheel discs all around.

Compared to the previous Fortuner, the low speed ride is more or less the same (jiggly, matagtag), but as the speeds go up, it's smoother than the outgoing model.

      Delete
    2. Why would Toyota do that? I mean we can understand if that's the spec everywhere. We can understand if the price is cheap. But at 2.1+M? Isn't Toyota fooling Filipino buyers for knowingly putting inferior specs compared to other markets? Would a 5 link instead of 4, and another pair of disc instead of drum brakes dent the already hefty price? Toyota is disrespecting the Filipino people's intellegence. Bad Toyota.

    5. ^Wag ka naman manlait ng Kia. Kia makes better cars than what Toyota Philippines sells in our market. Isang test drive palang. Lots of power, super refined cabin, very comfortable ride. Can't say the same about Toyota these days. So disappointing!

  6. The fortuner is under-equipped and too expensive for what you're getting. Drum brakes? No sun roof? Old school 3rd row seats? The 2M price has no basis.

For the length, well a Honda City is 4440mm long and this current Fortuner is 4795mm...which is just about 14inches. Oh my, that's a lot of road space. Oh wait, somebody talked about a crossover...so let's look at Juke which is *gasp* 4125mm long. So does that mean that we shouldn't but the City because it occupies more road space?

      Delete
    7. 14 inches makes a lot of difference. Go ask your mom.

    8. 14 inches is significant. Imagine thousands of cars x 14 inches. The worst is when every car is a big SUV or pickup, and there's limited parking space.

  29. this is the most 99% negative review i've read. during my vacation, we just bought a 2016 Fortuner 2.4 4x2 g dsl a/t in Toyota - La Union. engine & chassis are all made in Indonesia. even it's not power gate, still drum brakes, fabric seat, no push start button, no led lights, manual seat adjust, manual a/c, no backup sensor & camera i pick the right decision because of the responsive engine malakas humatak "uphill", maganda suspension sa lubak at "matipid" sa fuel maybe because of the ecomode. for ride quality, unlike Hilux hindi naman matatad kapag dumadaan sa lubak at maning-mani yung malalalim na lubak. spacious yung cabin 1st & 2nd row but yung 3rd row i must admit hindi kasya adult. center console touch screen is easy to use unlike the Everest. the material used inside the cabin are premium & doesn't look cheap like the seat fabric compared to Montero at ok din yung quality ng hard plastics & some touch of leather na ginamit. the 3rd row is easy to access thanks to one-touch tumble. even if the 3rd row is used, there is still enough cargo space at the back. yung a/c malamig kahit naka set sa low. for safety, you have to step on the brake pedal before you can shift the gear to p, r, n or d unlike the gear box design of Montero. also, if you accidentally turned off the engine while the gear is in r, n or d you will not be able to start or remove the key unless you select p. For Mitsubishi Montero Sport amid the fuel scandal, shares bought by Nissan, what happened to the the 3rd party that will investigate SUA?, discontinued Pajero & Lancer, I think they are going bankruptcy. kapag nasa driver seat sobrang lapit ng winshield konti na lang mauuntog ka na. masikip pa sa loob. yung e-park in replace ng hand brake sa tingin ko hindi safe lalo na kung may makulit ka na bata accidentally masagi niya yun button tumbling ang sasakyan mo. gear box design problem kaya i think sua is not a myth. For Ford Everest despite the increase in sales that you used to publish every month, I doubt it if it will translate to more service centers at kung totoo man iyan mura na sana piyesa nila kaya "can't afFORD". I also read na may nagliyab na Everest during its launching sa Australia. By the way Ford pulls out in Indonesia that's why they have to work hard on their advertisements in the Philippines. In Qatar, I saw a few sights of all-new Fortuner on the road but none of the Everest, Trailblazer or Mux except for Montero (once). I'm happy w/ my Fortuner & I'm planning to add accessories in my next vacation.

    3. Dear Mr. 6/11 12:49 AM

I normally don’t respond to comments like these, but I think I’ll make an exception in this case because I’d like point out some details that make it obvious you haven’t spent time with the Montero Sport and Everest.

First, I agree the Fortuner does have good ride over the rough stuff. I mentioned it both during the First Drive feature as well as in this review. However, it fails when you drive it in the city. Now, maybe you spend more time driving off-road, and the Fortuner is good there, but there’s no denying that both low-speed and city driving refinement are lacking.

Second, again, I did mention that the all-new Fortuner is still spacious. It doesn’t have the same headroom as it did before (again, you can read that in the review).

Third, you CANNOT shift the gear lever of the Montero Sport WITHOUT stepping on the brake pedal. The earliest Montero Sport didn’t have a shift override yes, but the newer ones (those equipped with the VGT engine and the all-new 2016 model) have them. So you have to press on the brakes to shift the gearlever out of Park.

Fourth, we still do not know what’s going to happen with the Nissan/Mitsubishi alliance, but they didn’t file for bankruptcy as you mentioned. Nissan simply bought into the company. Nissan saw it as an opportunity because of Mitsubishi’s tanking share value brought about the fuel mileage scandal in Japan. This alliance will actually strengthen both brands bringing forth better and more affordable products. MMPC for instance, mentioned the possibility that their Santa Rosa plant may start to assemble Nissan products alongside Mitsubishi ones. They will also share resources in R&D as well.

Fifth, the electronic parking brake CANNOT be disengaged unless your foot is firmly on the brake pedal. This is the case with the all-new Montero Sport and the same with any vehicle equipped with an electronic parking brake.

Sixth, the Everest that burned down in Australia is of an incorrectly replaced car battery. Ford says it’s a one-off incident and that it was caused because, and I quote, “The findings were that one of six battery cables was not properly located under a bolt. This caused high resistance in the electrical system, and that generated heat.”

Finally, yes, Ford is pulling out of Indonesia mainly because of the unfavorable market conditions there. Ford, not having a local manufacturing footprint, didn’t find the importation of vehicles from Thailand to be favorable to their business there. That’s the reason why they shut it down. It’s the same decision they’ve done in Japan.

As Mr. 6/11 9:52 AM said, enjoy your Fortuner, but do not share misinformation.

    7. Fortuner maybe (maybe not) inferior to its competitor, pero filipinos are buying it hindi dahil wala silang alam kundi dahil gusto nila ng pangmatagalang unit. If I have the money, I'll go for the Fort, I'll go for the unit na common, 'yung unit na mas marami...

    8. Kung pyesa ang pag uusapan halos parehas wala parin sila kasi nga All New Models.

These are Not the things the adventurous man of heart needs, what matters most is the Power and Torque the engine puts up when challengers lurks and competition looms in the rugged trails and highways. 36. Nice review carguide ph, unlike other reviews na halatang biased. Personally, like the everest overall. Looks, maganda ang space sa loob, all features are helpful and cool, and the ride is comfy. Sa test drive unit, rinig ko yung bumps and cracks on the road unlike sa everest and fortuner. Fortuner, although it is an improvement, it's not justifiable sa price dahil lang reliable ang toyota. The competitors simply out class the fortuner sa features. At the end, walang best sa mga ito lahat may pros and cons. Ang "best" suv is based on the buyers alone. All these suv are good and does the job as an everyday car.

I was expecting Toyota to have better numbers considering the advanced technology (engine, transmission, eco-mode).

    1. Fuel economy does not always translate to savings. The MuX for example has a very weak engine so that you have to step hard on the gas pedal to make a decent move thus consuming more gas. Sum total, you use more gas besides underpowered.!

      Delete
    2. I already get better mileage. That alone makes me feel good about my decision to get the MU-X. It has more than enough power for me and my family. Wish I could afford to get the top of the line Fortuner with all it's bells and whistles but knowing that I already saved more about 750+K with the huge price difference. I can sleep soundly.

Not here to compete. Just giving my fuel consumption numbers for comparison sake. Peace.

    2. Toyota was never known to push the envelope and I don't think they're trying to. It understands that its customers are looking for high overall reliability and dependability. Its models may not have the best/fastest engines or the best interiors/toys/features, but they get consistently high marks for these attributes.

It's like hiring an employee-- would you rather have a high-profile/performance employee who won't stick around after a year, or a consistent topnotch employee who'll still be there after 10 years?

  41. Hi Mr. Ang. I'm in the market for a new SUV and have scrutinized the new fortuner on the showroom floor. That A-pillar makes it very difficult for tall persons like me (I'm 6'1") to get into the driver's seat. I have to bow my head down every time I try to get in and out and the effort hurts my neck. That was the deal breaker for me. I had to cross the new fortuner off of my list.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I haven't had any issues with Ingress (I'm 5'7"), but the new Fortuner does have significantly lower headroom than it did before. Though the Montero Sport felt tighter.

If you want something with lots of headroom, try the new Innova.

      Delete
    2. Thank you for your reply. Sitting in the driver's seat, the fortuner had good space. I noticed that the new montero sport with a/t has less room up front because of the swooping center console that curves into the foot well. The m/t model doesn't have the same center console which allows it to have more room.

Headroom while already sitting in the seats is adequate for both the new fortuner and the new montero sport. It's the getting in and out of the front seats where the fortuner falls short for tall people.

I've also tried out the Ford Everest. It's got a really great interior and there is nothing but rave reviews about it, but, ingress and egress from the 3rd row seats is very difficult. Unlike the rest of the SUVs in it's class, the Everest's 2nd row seats do not fold and tumble forward. For family men like me who ferry around up to 7 members of my household, relatively easy access to that 3rd row is crucial.

The new Innova is a good package. I'm considering it as a replacement for my 14 year old Isuzu crosswind xuv a/t. At the moment, though, I'm in the market for a 4x4 SUV to replace my 27 year old Gen 1 Pajero. It's down to the new montero sport or the 3.0 isuzu mu-x. Both of which, based on the reviews, have the softest ride.

    4. I can attest to this. 4JA1 ang Crosswind diba? Turbo na nga ata yan eh. Dati din akong owner ng Isuzu Pickup with 4JA1 non-turbo. 25 years old na yung sasakyan ko na yun and I can really say na matibay both ang engine at ang underchassis. Siguro mga bushings or what.

Kahit old model ng Isuzu, maganda yung gearing. At may nakapagsabi sa akin, the lower the HP ba yun or Torque ng auto mo, the more na mas magaan yung clutch feel. I don't know if it's technically true.

Wala siyang on-board computers to tell you of your FC pero I can manage to go some distance with just a few liters of fuel.

Pero matibay and it can bring you from Point A to Z to A ulit without hassle.

One more thing, sabi nga nung nag post eh yun ang binili niya kasi "Wala siyang budget".

    1. Hello Sir, I own a G 4x2 Diesel A/T variant. I choose the G over the V variant because of practicality. For me yung 260k price gap is not worth it, better save it for car accessories in the future.

  54. How come this still uses drum brakes at the rear while its competitors already uses disc brakes all around? Do you guys think that this will also use disc brakes all around in the future?

  56. Dear Sir Uly,

May mga questions lang po ako with regards to the 2.4L Fort (2GD-FTV). Thanks in advance!

    1. As stated by Toyota Spec Sheet and other review websites, yung torque ng 2.4L GD ay 400 Nm. But I saw some websites na nagsasabi na it's just 330 Nm (and the 400 Nm is through overboost). Hehe. And if the latter, ano po ba yung "Overboost" na sinasabi nila?

    2. Nakita ko din sa ibang legit review websites na yung 2.4L GD engine is VVT-i, maliban pa sa VNT and intercooler. Meanwhile, yung 2.8L GD ay walang VVT-i. Ang alam ko lang dati, Gasoline lang yung VVT-i but I researched na hindi pala. Ang tanong ko lang po sana, is it true and possible na may VVT-i ang 2.4L? And if so, bakit po kaya ito kailangan lagyan? While yung 2.8L hindi?

My primary concern po talaga about this is the "Reliability" and "Power" since hindi ko alam kung 330 Nm ba talaga or 400 Nm at kung may effect ba sa reliability yung "Overboost" at "VVT-i" na sinasabi?
