Nissan PH Recalls 2017-2018 X-Trails Due to "Phantom Braking"

Selected units of 2017-2018 Nissan X-Trail compact SUVs are being recalled due to a fault with one of its Advanced Driver Assist features.

In a disclosure, Nissan Philippines says that around 200 units of 2017 to 2018 X-Trail compact SUV units may suffer from a “phantom activation” of its Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) system. With that, the car may automatically apply the brakes even though no collision is imminent. When it activates while driving, the risk of a rear-end crash from a following vehicle may increase.

According to Nissan, these vehicles are fitted with a radar system made by Continental. The affected radar model, ARS410 may activate especially when the X-Trail maneuvers around specific upper structures. These structures include boom barriers (railroad crossing), low height clearances in bridges, parking garages, low-hanging traffic lights, and even steep incline roads.

Nissan says the fix is fairly easy, requiring a software update of the radar and advanced driver assistance system. The update itself takes just an hour and can be done through authorized Nissan dealers. You can also check if your unit is affected by entering your VIN number here.

In the meantime, the carmaker suggests turning the Forward Emergency Brake function off:
  1. On the left portion of the steering wheel, press Left or Right until “Setting” displays, and press the “OK” button.
  2. Press Up and Down to select and select “Driving Aids,” then “Driver Assistance”, and press “OK.”
  3. On the “Emergency Brake” use the “OK” button to uncheck the “Emergency Brake” system.
  4. When the FEB system is turned off, a warning light in orange illuminates.
  5. Take note: the FEB system will automatically turn on again when the engine is re-started.
